Descriptionthis is really a walk off homer for me. there are certainly artists i hope to still harass or originals i would like to pick up but my grail list is complete. all on the wall. lucky for me that my list (at time of purchase) has fit into my budget :) i have vivid memories of picking up this comic. it was the first comic i ever had and since i started collecting original art the cover has haunted me. i was nine when i picked up the issue and the idea of the original art hanging on my wall is mind blowing for sure. its not just that its a zeck cover or a marvel gi joe piece featuring so many of my favorite childhood play toys. there are a lot of memories wrapped in this issue. it was for auction a couple years back but the timing and $$$$ were not there for me then. i had planned on making an offer next summer but then it appeared on ebay. seeing the listing was a heart stopper. this hobby is so much about timing, i could not let it pass. i knew at some point it would sell to someone like me that would not part with it. it was a bit of a scramble but i could not be happier with the purchase.Social/Sharing |

Nice piece from THE GI Joe era. To acquire the art to the cover of your first comic you ever purchased is something special. Since I was lucky enough for that to happen to me, I know exactly where you are coming from. Although it was a long while back, I hope to post the scan later this week.

Matthew, congrats!!!! Gi Joe was such a favorite toy line of mine as well, and I still have my 1982 Short-Fuze figure in the package. Your cover is really a show stopper and I'll bet it looks great on the wall.

What a great way to start the M.Z./J.B. G.I. Joe cover run. Just a powerful image. Going on THIRTY years now, Zeck is still one of my favorite comic book artists. Congrats on this fine addition to your OA collection. :-]

Finally stopping by to say 'congrats' Matthew. Looks to be in great shape and surprisingly the zip appears to be complete. Beatty must have burnished the heck out of that cover. Something of a trophy I would say to have my first effort in a lengthy relationship with the G.I. Joe universe. Of course that had much to do with my relationship with Larry Hama. Great talent! Glad to hear that that one jumped off the racks and into your hands when you were a kid.

Really nice cover, Zeck and Beatty were a great pairing! Although I never read this comic (good news... no competition from me for the art!), I love the back story, and congratulate you on bringing this home! It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings.

This was the first GI Joe comic I ever bought. Who knew the same guy would later be the main artist for the Punisher!

I'm a huge fan of Zeck's work, as well as the early Marvel GI Joe title. From layouts to content, this is my favorite GI Joe cover...no disrespect Herb. All my favorite aspects of a title cover are reflected in this outstanding piece. Congrats Matthew, thanks for sharing!

I love this. I share a number of your memories, and nostalgia for it, but your story of the acquisition makes me think it absolutely fell into the right hands. Thanks so much for sharing it with us here.

The first comics I ever got were a 3-pack of GI Joe 21-23. My mom got me a subscription and the 1st comic I got in the mail was #25. It took me years to finally track down the missing #24 in my GI Joe run. Such a great cover!

The Zeck GIJOE covers were perfect, so well designed and gave you a good idea for what the book inside was going to feature.

This is GOLD TIER childhood capital N for NOSTALGIA Triple G GGG GRAIL magic right here!! One a generation would start and end wars for! Alas, with a fate as irrelevant and impermenant as a distant ancestor's beloved memory of a childhood friend.

I mean....
I love it. Congrats!!
