DescriptionYes it was a fill in issue and yes Big John wasn't the first choice to do this cover (George Perez was and it got lost, but later found) and YES Buscema did a great job on this cover and YES my favorite run of the Avengers was between issues 150 and 200 and this lays right in the middle of all that!! So happy to have an Avengers cover from this era. The more I think about it the more excited I get. My Avengers Official Index says Frank Giacoia inked this cover but I see no indication that he did and CL certainly didn't give him credit and it looks like all Buscema to me... so?? Thoughts? Here is CL has to say: Primary Artist Name: JOHN BUSCEMA Secondary Artist Name: Year: 1978 Dimensions: This art has an image are of approximately 10" x 15" End Date: 9/1/2020 8:29:00 PM ComicLink Comments: Comic art legend John Buscema drew this 1978 cover to Avengers #178, a Bronze Age issue focused on one of the team's most popular members of the era, the Beast. Following the epic conclusion of the multi-issue Michael Korvac saga in Avengers #177, the issue featuring this cover was a chance for the characters, creators and readers to take a breath by focusing on a smaller adventure called "Night of the Beast". It featured the jovial mutant Hank McCoy, the founding member of the X-Men who had joined the team a few years earlier after evolving into a blue, furry version of the character--a true Beast. The cover features vignettes including one that also shows Captain America, the Wasp and the Beast's best buddy, Wonder Man. In another vignette we see the Beast battling a new foe called the Manipulator. Buscema was Marvel's #1 artist during this period and this is a memorable example of his work from the era. Interestingly, before Buscema illustrated this cover, George Perez and Joe Sinnott had already drawn a similar cover for Avengers #178, but the artwork was lost during the production process. Buscema stepped in and did his own version of the cover for publication, which is the one that is offered here. The artwork for the Perez/Sinnott cover did eventually surface but it was never published. Social/Sharing |

Great cover. This looks like it's all Buscema to me as well (I wouldn't trust auction houses to do a thorough verification anyway ;)

The Grand Comic Database credits John with cover inks. I'd agree, too. When John inks himself, it has a certain look, and that's it. Congrats on an awesome cover!

Super nice cover from the Golden Age of the Avengers! Better than the Perez cover and I'm a huge Perez fan. Love it!

Very memorable cover and great depiction of the Beast. Wish he'd go back to this look, seeing this makes me miss that pointy-hair look!

Great Buscema cover, Kirk! But it serves to remind me how much I used to love The Beast, and how much I've despised the character ever since they turned him into Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy. Marvel really needs to smarten up and write a story about how Hank finds a cure to make himself human again and it works in reverse, so it makes him go back to his previous look seen here, but the serum inexplicably stops the reversing process, thereby leaving him still a hairy beast, but the one seen HERE! The character as portrayed for the last 20 years or so has literally ZERO visual appeal, as proven by my inability to sell art featuring him as Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced boy, whereas I can easily sell almost any page with this version of the Beast on it. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Congratulations on the great buy!
