Description

This comic art purchase was 25 years in the making. I poured over the published version of this page endlessly on the life-altering car ride back from Seattle with the family back in the early 1980s. I liked the Thing's 'Sam Jones' line and I liked how all the villains introduced themselves, expository-style. It is no exaggeration to say that this page is directly responsible for almost three decades of mostly uninterrupted comic book reading and art collecting... A very expensive piece of art, now that I think about it in that way!

When my favorite page from my very first comic book showed up on eBay in early 2007, I had to pull out all the stops.

For those who do not know, Marvel Two in One # 76 featured the Thing and Iceman (from the original X-Men) facing off against the Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime (a group of villains from the Steve Ditko era of Amazing Spider-Man). This page features Circus of Crime members Princess Python and Cannonball.

The art here is by Jerry Bingham and Chic Stone. The lettering on this page was done by Michael Higgins.

Trivia fans might be interested to know that MTIO 76 was an 'inventory' story (not a big surprise). The title crossed out at the top of the page also reveals that MTIO 76 was originally meant to appear in the pages of Marvel TEAM UP, not Two in One.

Beautiful deep ink tones on this one. And all that varied perspective. That and it's from your grail story...the perfect page.

Wow, if there was ever a page that deserved a particular home, this is it. Way to go Brian.

While it's always a good story when a collector finds a grail, some stories are better than others.

Great inking by Chic Stone. Love the action and power lines (for lack of a better word). MTIO was always a favorite read. Fun. I still pick 'em up at the conventions.

It is always fascinating to see how a grail becomes a grail for someone. It was a cool story but for some reason, it took a grip on you and all of us on CAF are all the better for it, that it did!
