Erte - Romain de Tirtoff (23 November 1892 – 21 April 1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer known by the pseudonym Erté, from the French pronunciation of his initials.

Before I was a comic art collector I was very interested in antiques and in particular the art nouveau and art deco eras. I was still in residency and so our budget was modest but I was interested in design and I remember what an impact Erte had on me and how much I loved the design sensibilities he was able to bring to his art. He did a lot of design work for ballet and stage and this is the costume design for a 1923 production of Madame Butterfly. It is my understanding that the Los Angeles County Art Museum is in possession of an original from this same series with a different pattern on the dress as part of their Erte collection. I am looking forward to finding an appropriate frame for this and having it find a place on our walls.

The Madame Butterfly theme was revisited for the design of one of his most famous statues years later.

I find that Art Nouveau (also called Liberty style here in Italy) and Art Déco have had great influence on the comics from that era. Congrats on this exquisite piece!
