This puts the "stun" in stunning! Johnny Craig's hand is so much more clearly evident in this original than the printed color version... and of course Gene the Dean swallowed enough high octane pure dynamism pills with his morning coffee the day he drew this, it would have been a fatal dose to anybody else. I bet even Kirby saw this and thought "Whoa... raw power!"

Zoinks!!!! When I saw the title "Iron Man 1 Cover" I thought it might be yet another Colan recreation.... I'm STUNNED at the beauty of the REAL DEAL! Congrats!

Did Marvel use an overlay or something for the background when they printed this cover? A lot of the figures are the same as on the OA but they're in different places.

Nice catch, Chris. You can see the note on the right side (I guess from Stan) saying that the IM image should be raised above the title. They probably moved some of the other images around too.

Amazing David. One of the most memorable covers on this entire site. I am jealous beyond measure.

Beautiful cover, Dave! One of the greatest of the late 60s Marvel covers, up there with Captain America #100...

As an Iron Man fan, seeing this page gives me goosebumps. And thanks for sharing. It's refreshing to see so many great pieces haven't fallen into a collecting black hole, never to be heard from again.

This is such an iconic image, I've seen it dozens of times. But this is the first opportunity I've had to view the original artwork. Congratulations on obtaining such a key piece of original art, as well as an extremely well-drawn one.

Gorgeous and historical. A Silver Age icon, that helped launch what would become a multi-billion dollar franchise. Should be in the Smithsonian!

It doesn't get any better than this. Pure Colan masterpiece. One of the greatest marvel covers of the silver age (*OR ANY AGE*). "PERIOD"!

Wow, Dave. You are the guardian of a truly historic page from one of the best (and IMO under-rated) artists of the silver and bronze ages. Take good care of it :-)

Here's a weird question: did Gene draw the background figures as well? There's something about them that reminds me of Tuska. Am I nuts??

Holy Crap! Congrads! This was one of the very first comics I ever bought as a 6 year old! Simply Classic cover!

I clicked on this with hesitance, for fear I'd be fooled by another 're-creation'. Thank HEAVENS it is true -- one of the most iconic covers of the silver age. Just plain beautiful, and well done finding it, and thank you for posting it.

Fantastic silver age cover! I love how Subby 1, Hulk 102, Cap 100 and this one are all around. I remember picking them all up from the same store as a kid and waiting for the comics to be delivered on Thursday so I could pull out the best copy from the middle of the stack.

Both comics.org and marvel.wikia.com list the inker as Mike Esposito, and Johnny Craig inked the interiors. You own the cover, so I figured I would run it by you. Do you know definitively that Johnny inked the Dean for the cover? I remain in constant awe of your collection!

This issue is a "Holy Grail" in my comics collection- I can't honestly imagine owning the actual artwork....it boggles the mind! Looking at the art, you can see that the published piece detracted grom an OUTSTANDING cover- it's much better in black & white!

My dad bought Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 4 as a wee lad and they are my most treasured comics that I own (as he passed a few years later). This image is more than nostalgic, it is charged with so much emotion for me. I so appreciate you sharing this. Congratulations!

It's always incredible to me when I stumble upon legendary pieces like this that have been public for years. Iron Man started my love for comics. I'm too young to have bought this off the shelf, but it was a grail I pursued for most of my life. Now I have a near complete Iron Man collection and a burgeoning art collection. My how time flies...
Congrats doesn't seem near enough to convey the magnitude of this piece, but congrats nonetheless!

This popped up in my Featured Premium Art today and my first thought was 'is it okay to comment on the same piece of art twice?'. I decided it was, clicked through to the piece...and was stunned I had never commented! What an oversight - this is an incredible piece of comic art history. And, I'll likely comment on it again in the future!

I always hoped and wished that there were more artists that would incorporate more Gene Colan qualities into their work. He was such a dynamic and unique artist!!
