DescriptionFrom Olden Times: This commission by Alan Kupperberg was completed in the Fall of 2005. I asked Alan to re-visit his work on Marvel Two-in-One # 45, starring the ever-loving Thing and Captain Mar-vell. Alan came up with a series of seven story-related commission prelims and gave me the opportunity to choose the one I liked best. I was also asked if I'd like the commission to be drawn on vintage Marvel cover stock... You can guess how fast I said yes to that offer. An odd aspect of MTIO 45 is that there is not much in the way of new story to work with... a good chunk of the book is spent recapping Fantastic Four # 91. Alan ended up using pieces from a FF 91 flashback and pieces from MTIO 45 to create this new drawing. Rest in Peace, Alan. Update: This drawing has now been colored by the great Bob Sharen (who happens to be an original MTIO colorist from back in the day). Bob printed out a cleaned up, full size, high resolution scan of this drawing onto a new art board, then applied his colors to that copy. The result is stunning to behold. My thanks to Gerry T for linking me to Bob via this CAF post. Social/Sharing |

I remembered that I found this story disappointing because I had just read the FF story a few week before MTIO. But there is NOTHING disappointing about this. Nicely done.

Alan Kupperberg is among a number of artists I sincerely regret not commissioning when I had the opportunity. I'm glad that you didn't make that same mistake. An MTIO classic, this one!

MTIO 45 was a very odd but memorable book, mostly because of Torgo's severed head being delivered to Ben Grimm in a box. And the head still manages to spark back to life to save the day at the end. Sheesh! I think this comic inspired the movie Se7en for sure. Anyhow, Bob's colors are very sharp and tasteful here. Nice work!
