Description

This illustration appeared in Stars and Stripes on March 4, 1944, and depicts the the first Vichy war crimes trial in which Frenchmen judged Frenchmen for crimes against their own. The men on trial were members of the staff of the Vichy concentration camp of Hadjerat M'Guil, in southern Algiers. Gregor Duncan had previous experience has a courtroom artist, which certainly came in handy for this assignment. Duncan worked from life, as is noted in his inscription, and added the three figures on the left. Interesting, the three figures are not present in the published version, which can be seen below. My thanks to Jim Frost for providing a scan of the published page.

The original artwork is accompanied by a caption, which reads:
