Description

OK, here's something incredibly badass and exciting - my favorite page, from my favorite chapter, from The Life & Times of $crooge McDuck, arguably the best Uncle Scrooge story of the last 40 years!!

This is the climactic chapter fans were waiting for since the day the art started to be split, when, after years of failure, Scrooge finally finds his fortune and becomes King of the Klondike!

This page always stuck with me, a fun 'manual' for how to prospect for gold during the winter. The lettering was added digitally so you can read the wonderful wording, but the original art is blank (as is common for Disney stories that are often translated).

I also got two truly epic money shots!!

First, Scrooge walking away from his cabin and claim in panel 5, full Klondike regalia, as dreamy as you can get. This stylish look only appears on 7 pages in this chapter, and this was my favorite of the bunch. This panel is Klondike perfection.

And then the cherry on top is that final epic silhouette panel as, "He is also about to enter into legend!". This is one of the best page turns of the series, the fuse lit as Scrooge heads into town. You don't know what's coming yet, but you can almost hear the music building, knowing Scrooge is about to make Donald's tantrums look like nothing...

This moment of the story, this moment of the character, his mindset, his grit - THIS is the Scrooge I love. Tougher than nails and not to be trifled with.

This is so friggin' cool...

This page is magnificent! I absolutely love it! This memorable page is emblazoned in my mind and is one of the finest examples of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck storyline! Congratulations!

The cross-section panel is amazing cartooning!  The rest of the panels give us Rosa at the apex of his storytelling!

This is a fantastic page! If I could have afforded it, this one would've been my target in the last auction. Do you plan on putting an overlay with the text?

It's an option! I do think the page looks better lettered :) For now I'm still taking it all in!!

Amazing page. Those last two money shots really had me interested as well. Nice to see that someone else has been photoshopping the original lettering to overlay the artwork with. Not as easy of a task as it may initially seem if you want to get it to work when framed...

It is an amazing page! I was certain I'd have had more competition! :)

As for the lettering, it wasn't too bad - maybe 30 minutes/page in Photoshop? And I printed transparencies on my home printer and then layered them outside a proper archival sleeve. I suspect a copy shop could print them, too.

Congrats on your pages as well!!

Thanks! I was also prepared for much more competition.

I extracted the lettering from the DRL Kindle publication but found that the lettering was too bold for my taste to be directly used for the larger-sized original art. The resolution wasn't quite the best either. Got it to work okay with masking and edge refinement, however. Even went as far as to ask the original letterer Todd Klein himself for comments. Also had to scan the original art since the dimensions for the Heritage Auctions images were slightly off (apparently they use a camera to photograph the pages they display and don't scan). Since I'll be framing the artwork on the wall, there's also the question of achieving optimal optical quality (minimum reflection, hazing, warping), proper air space between the art and the glass, minimum shadows cast by the lettering, proper overlay materials that don't taint the artwork etc. It's been a lot of work, but maybe I'm just being a stickler for these things. :)
