DescriptionThis one is a little special for me. This was obtained when I finally got to meet master artist, and all-around nice guy, Kevin Nowlan. He was one of the main reasons I flew to the Baltimore Comic-Con in August of 2011. It was a real thrill to meet him and his wonderful wife, chat with them for quite a while at his table, and of course, to get some books signed and to get this fantastic sketch. I don't know whose terrific idea it was, but a chair was set up on the fan side of Kevin's table, so that the current recipient of whatever sketch Kevin was working on could sit in some comfort and talk and observe while the piece was being done. Knowing Kevin's particular affinity for the Frankenstein monster, and of course having a love for the films and character myself (as well as Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein!), it was pretty easy to know what to ask for. However, Kevin seemed to be having a hard time drawing him! After a couple of attempts, he realized that he'd been putting the eyes in a tad too low, and finally, after some careful erasing, produced the piece you see here. Hey, I wasn't complaining...gave me more time in the chat and observe seat! And I'm ridiculously happy with the finished piece. On a personal side note, I ran into an old friend I hadn't seen in 15 years at this show, also had breakfast with the great and prolific writer J.M. DeMatteis, and this convention was just one week after I first met (in person) the woman who went on to become my wife, so this piece serves as a reminder of meeting Kevin and a major turning point in my life as well!Social/Sharing |

I think you and I had very similar reactions to our respective Nowlan Frankenstein pieces Ken. It wasn't until I acquired my Nowlan Frankenstein painting and started reading about it on his blog, that I realized what a huge fan Kevin is of not only the character, but the iconic actor who played him. It makes the piece that much more special when you know it's a character the artist loves. Congrats on this wonderful pencil piece!

It may even have been your piece, along with interviews with Kevin, that made me realize HOW much he loves Frankenstein! I always want the artist to WANT to be drawing the piece, not just doing another job...makes a difference. Thanks Eric!
