DescriptionWhen I saw this piece pop up in an auction recently, it looked really familiar. I couldn't place it at first. Nicer than a convention sketch, lots of fine line details, and more of a finished drawing than would have been completed outside of the studio. So, I ended up the top bidder at a price I was happy with if it just turned out to be a really nice fully finished studio piece, and I reached out to Brian to show it to him and see if he remembered it. It struck me that it might have been in a batch of preliminary pieces and studio drawings Brian had brought with him to America and sold at one of the conventions where I helped him with his booth. Somewhere between 2008 and 2010, likely in New York. They were all older pieces from the 80's and 90's that he had stored away for decades and brought with him to sell. I remember this and many other pieces like it selling at those convention appearance but we didn't discuss much of the backstory, or origins, to them at the time. Luckily, Brian instantly recognized this piece, when it was drawn, and what it was used for. He confirmed that not only was this a studio piece but this is his original character concept drawing for Morgan LeFay, created before his landmark run on the Camelot 3000 series, that he used as his baseline for how the character would look throughout the series. His own personal "style guide" if you will, but right here is where the final look for Morgan LeFay was born. A little slice of comic book history, created at the beginning of the 80's in preparation for the series that's about to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Knowing how important and how foundational a piece of art this truly is I am thrilled to have added this to my collection and thankful for Brian's memory of both the piece and his pre-production work on Camelot 3000 that confirmed that importance. Very neat! The two hole punch substantiates the piece further as a piece on file used for reference.

For sure, I was surprised but he mentioned this binder of pieces right away and mentioned the one he did with Merlin and a rubber chicken and a few others. Sounds like he used it quite a bit while working on the series so it burned the memories a little deeper.

You are even luckier that I did not buy it. It went at a bargain price. I have a Merlin drawing, framed, which also has the two hole punches in the paper. Its lovely.

I know it. My max bid was around double where it ended. I was very pleasantly surprised at that as it's very rare these days to get something for less than you're willing to pay.

Even as a concept drawing, Bolland made Morgan le Fay a mesmerizing character. She stole the show in Camelot 3000.

How do you run around causing mayhem in heels like that? Great piece, in the right collection.

You just have to stand still to cause mayhem, if you look like that.

Super cool history - I am another that didn't bid on this - even though it has one of my favorite dedications! I believe you got it for less than was asked when it was offered at the last ComicArt Live - congrats on the pickup - now Bolland hole punches may generate additional bids!

Bolland with hole punches in this size, especially on Camelot 3000 characters, likely indicate they're pre-publication style guide/character studies. So, you're right.
