Update: July 27, 2012: I met Gilbert Shelton at SDCC 2012. He kindly autographed the Fat Freddy's Cat, the scan is below. He was so taken with the Freak Brothers parody that he gave me his card (complete with his address and phone number) so I could send him a scan. Finally, he did a Wonder Wart Hog sketch, featured below. I asked for Lois Lamebrain, but he didn't remember what she looked like. Great Guy.

Brian Howard Art purchased the entire Rip Off Press archive which included these two pieces, which I bought. The bottom consists of two stray panels that fell loose from an episode of Fat Freddy's Cat, complete with dried up glue on the back. I had hopes that the top was a doodle or a prelim by Shelton for a Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers story. The Fat Freddy's Cat is actually about 2 1/2" by 4 3/4" and the ,Freak Brothers is shown proportional to that.

Neither Brian or I knew whether the FFBros was even a drawing. An examination of the back later on proved it was an ink drawing. According to the people at Rip Off Press, this hung on the their wall for years. They believe it is a piece of fan art on very brown paper.

Gilbert Shelton was the best of the 1960-70's underground cartoonists, starting his craft before the underground comics began with Wonder Wart Hog. He wrote clever and (rare for underground artists) coherent stories. As of this writing, a Freak Brothers movie is in the works. He gets the artist credit because the Cat and the Warthog are his.
