Description

It’s a special art day for me. I’ve been re-reading the early Spider-Man issues, and every time I go through those stories, I’m more impressed with what Lee and Ditko created. The artwork is almost a class in sequential storytelling, and some of the techniques used by Ditko are still cutting edge today.

Spider-man’s look and personality certainly evolved over those first three years. While it was all great, I loved the first year. In the first year, Spider-man looked a lot more like Peter Parker in a costume. By the end of Ditko’s run, he was a lot more muscular and super hero looking. His supporting cast, the villains, also changed and their personalities tightened up. My longstanding view is that our heroes are defined by their villains, and the unless you really believe that the hero is in danger, there is no great story. In the first year, we met Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, Electro, the Lizard and the Sandman. Was that a year, or what?!! In the first year, the Vulture appeared twice, and Doc Ock was in three issues. Remember, the Green Goblin didn’t show up till Issue 14. Now, I’m not sure how everyone else ranks Spider-Man’s bad guys, but for me, it’s Green Goblin first, Doc Ock second, and then there is a gulf for the next grouping (that could be the next fun thread!).

So, when I had a chance to get a Ditko page with Spider-Man facing off against Doc Ock, it was a simple choice for me – do it! I was able to make an acquisition from Issue 12 (featuring the reappearance of Otto Octavius in the first year of the book). Page 19 has just about everything you’d want; a running fight sequence starting with a scene of Spidey leaping into the camera, a trademark Ditko roof top fight, some neat perspective shots from “the man on the street”, and an awesome shot of Doc Ock with his arms extended in a classic deserted art gallery.

Quite a coup! Really can't decide which page I like better...but the bottom panel on this one is a doozy. Lucky dog!

So much to say about this page... I remember buying a copy of the Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 as a kid. I remember that cover so vividly... the main image of Spidey punching the Hulk as the Avengers look on, and two smaller images of Spidey fighting Doctor Octopus. The second Spidey/Ock image is the last panel of the very page you own. Thank you, my friend, for sharing such a special page that evokes very fond comic-collecting memories. This page is a prime example of the magic that Marvel brought readers in those early days.

Congratulations Ron, you have acquired a wonderful page. As you state, it is so 'meaty' in terms of storytelling devices such as angles of view, main characters and the human touch of linking in the everyday 'man in the street,......this is part of what was lost with subsequent illustrators of this title, no matter how slick or talented they were. Ditko was the 'master' and you have a 'masterpiece'!

It's funny to think that all-powerful DC missed out on both Ditko and Kirby, and they both had to go scrounge work from two-bit Atlas comics. I see Ditko like one of his Randian heroes, turning in work of unprecedented quality, far beyond anything that was expected or paid for. I'm a Kirby guy, myself, but there is a way that Ditko pages are the most special of the early Silver Age--you can feel the time and care he put into them. The intricate storytelling, the amazing detail, as in the sculptor's studio setting here, --it is the creme de la creme.

Just a wonderful example of Dikto's unique artistry--from the perspective in the first panel to Doc's arms to the onlookers in the middle first panel to all the wonderful stuff crammed into the bottom panel. You could easily get lost in this page and not come out for days!

Great villains are always what makes a great action page. This one certainly delivers. Ditko Spidey ! Doc Ock ! What more can you ask for? Then the last panel just smacks you in the face. Pure gold my friend, pure gold. Congratulations Ron, you've done it again. Cheers! N.

Iconic is such an overused word. But that is exactly what this page is. After all, it doesn't get much more iconic than a Spider-Man versus Doctor Octopus page illustrated by Steve Ditko. And the condition of this original page looks fantastic. Congratulations!
