DescriptionThe Englehart/Rogers/Austin run in Detective has always been a favorite. Englehart started writing with issue #469, and Rogers and Austin jumped on two issues later, and this team was together through 476 (Rogers stuck around for three more issues written by Len Wein). Although their tenure was relatively short, the run has stood the test of time as one of the most well remembered Batman runs. The characterization of the Joker as a homicidal lunatic, the creation of Silver St. Cloud as a love interest, and Rogers’ angular steep views of Gotham have become standards to which all Batman artists are measured. When I would try my hand at drawing Batman, it was Marshall Rogers’ Batman that I was trying to emulate. The lean lines, huge cape, and dramatic pointy ears were just great. The stories was gripping, and the handling of the Joker, Penguin, and Hugo Strange were just fantastic. I’m thrilled to have this cover in my collection.Social/Sharing |

They don't create covers like this anymore. The composition is exceptional from an artist that was perfect for the era. Kudos galore Ron.

The details and the mood of this cover is at once, exceptional and typical of the work Rogers & Austin did on their Detective run. This was their big chance and they were aiming to impress and, now, almost 40 years later, they still do.

This is a phenomenal example of the great power and detail that Marshall Rogers brought to Batman. His work -- like Adams years before him -- revolutionized the way many of us looked and thought about Batman. Of course, Enghlehart has to get equal billing for that but Marshall's art brought these stories and this character back into the limelight. This is a tremendous piece and I'm so pleased it hangs in the Sonenthal Museum of Comic Art.

I'm not really a huge Marshall Rogers fan. But this is a beautiful piece. And I'm not sure if it's been acknowledged that this seems to be a sort of homage to Detective Comics 27.
