Description

This is my favorite Sanjulian painting in my collection. This is the second of two early Warren Vampirella covers that the master did for his agent. The way the story was told to me years back when I bought the first painting (Vampi 16), Sanjulian's agent at SI wanted the original paintings that he did for Warren Publishing company that showcased Vampirella. Being that the agreement between Warren and SI was that any artwork done for Warren became Warren's property, SI's owner knew he had a full stream of work lined up for many of his artists---he didn't want to strain a business relationship early on by trying to get these paintings back. With the 16, the original used by Warren was actually a prelim. The version I have is the final finished product, done a short period of time afterwards. With this painting, Sanjulian matched the color patterns the way the magazine actually printed up, which varied a bit from the original dark green used on the printed original version. Sanjulian kept homage to his original---but refined it just a tad to make what my eyes sees as a superior image. These two paintings went from SI's owner to a collecting friend of his that, again from what I was told, lived in France. I'm so glad to have both masterpieces!
