Description

Usually I have a story or explanation how I got a certain piece in my collection. This time around however, there's no drama associated with acquiring the art. Another case of "right place, right time", I had it bought and paid for within minutes of discovering it. This is my first cover, so I'm thrilled to have it! Thanks Mitch!

What you see here is the Ed McGuinness variant cover of "Giant Size Wolverine: Old Man Logan" #1, the last chapter of Old Man Logan. It was also published as a pinup in the back of the issue, along with all the other covers in the series. I REALLY wanted an Old Man Logan cover, and this is one of my favorites. It's interesting to see OML through the eyes of another artist, since I so closely associate the OML world with McNiven. McGuinness' style is amazing at large battle scenes like this though, and it really fits the characters well. His big shapes capture the power and intensity behind the movements perfectly. Plus, I dig Old Man Hulk's crazy eyes as he towers over Wolverine, doing his King Hippo "Punch-Out!" attack. :- )

What I've always liked about this cover is that there is a lot of anticipation in it. Like it is the last possible second before the characters collide. Or the last frame in a film strip leading up to the fight. You kind of want to take a step back so you don't get crushed between them or stepped on. I'm also very impressed with the composition and the way McGuinness did the layout of the cover. I don't know that I've ever seen a cover setup exactly like this before. It's a rather ambitious layout that a lot of artists couldn't have pulled off, since the perspective is rather complex. McGuinness absolutely nailed it though. I also dig the minimalistic Dr Suess looking pine trees. The lines they create, along with the lines created by Wolverine's claws, draw the eye to the center of the image, increasing the feeling of confrontation and that everything is charging towards that point. Exactly what a grove of pine trees is doing in the desert is left unexplained, but they look really good there. :- )

According to McGuinness, he inked this one himself.

The inker on this cover is credited to Chris 'Soto' Sotomayor. You can go to www.comicbookdb.com and look up Ed's work for everything he has ever done. Here is the link to the info about the cover: http://www.comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=180503

Interesting perspective....very cool cover. Congrats. Looking at all of your nice Old Man Logan pages just got me curious enough to give that storyline a chance sometime soon. I haven't read anything modern (other than the Cap Reborn mini) since the early 90s. Wow, that's a long time. :) Again, congrats on the OML pickups.

Alas, the one that got away. I have hesitated on many pieces and look back and think 'oh well', but this one still haunts me to this day. Such a great cover by such an awesome artist.
