DescriptionDay 21. Thirty-One days of Star Wars (2024 edition) continues!Where in the world is Bob Layton? Right here, baby! Just in time for the anniversary of the theatrical release of The Empire Strikes Back (5/21/1980), my favorite Star Wars film. Basic recap for this issue - some time after the battle on Hoth (as seen in ESB), Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Lt. Barlon Hightower leave Arbra (new Rebel base) to investigate a crippled freighter which appears to have come from Hoth. Luke believes that Wedge Antilles is aboard. Wedge is here described as an old friend who grew up with Luke on Tatooine [canon changes later]. When they come aboard, the ship appears to be abandoned, but the ship's log contains a recording of Wedge's voice. The issue then flashes back with Wedge's recording as narrator, and tells the story of how Wedge and fellow snowspeeder gunner Wes Janson survived the battle, but got stranded on Hoth. They were stranded there for months, fending off the deadly cold and Wampa attacks. On this page Wedge interrupts some Wampas preparing to make a meal of a Tauntaun in the abandoned base. Skip to the end, Janson doesn't make it but Luke and Wedge reunite. These secondary character-focused issues were always my favorites, as it built out the galaxy. The page was already signed by both Bob and Luke McDonnell, but I took it to OAX 2024 anyway just to get it in a pic with me and the legendary Layton (added thanks to my photographer Kasra!). I wish you would step up flashback Wedge, my friend
You could cut ties or reunite
Hoth you've been living in
And if Luke do not want Antilles again
I'm Bob Layton's fan
South Korea man
The Jason boy
A bit Luke insane
Icing Kasra's recent fame
You know Luke's force is strong
You're the first to strike
Your page too proud
You're the flash of light in a burial Hoth
I know taun-taun's gone
Well, everyone I know has got a Layton
To say
Put the best of page

Awesome pick up, Jeff! You can't go wrong with a Marvel splash page featuring some Hoth action and creatures!

Great page - awesome issue too!!! Wedge is one of the best B or C (debatable/subjective of course) characters in the Star Wars universe for me personally, love it!!!

Don't know any of these characters but I really dig the art. I loved Luke McDonnell's Iron Man run and he was always solid on anything he drew. But the crisp, Layton inks of the era really make the page!
