DescriptionDay 22. Thirty-one days of Star Wars (2025 edition).Shira Brie's plea for personal leave clashes with Leia's security protocols, until Luke steps in as both escort and ally on this page from "Shira's Story". David Michelinie plot and script, Walt Simonson plot and pencils, with Tom Palmer inks. If you know your OG Marvel Star Wars Expanded Universe lore, then you understand the importance of this storyline. Marvel’s original Star Wars series went through a bit of a renaissance under writer David Michelinie along with artists Walter Simonson and Tom Palmer. Over the course of 18 issues (barring the occasional fill-in issue), they told a series of stories that continued where the Empire Strikes Back left off, deftly moving the story forward while simultaneously maintaining the status quo (to not spoil anything being planned for the third film). Michelinie and Simonson’s most memorable addition to the Star Wars stable of characters (I would robustly argue) was Shira Brie, a rebel pilot initially meant to provide a romantic interest for Luke Skywalker and a rival for Princess Leia. She soon turns out to be a (spoiler alert) Imperial spy and manages to frame Luke (double spoiler alert) for her own murder. Her return (spoiler alert – she got better!) and first appearance as the dark lady Lumiya was two years after she appeared as Brie, in writer Mary Jo Duffy's Star Wars #88, illustrated by Bob McLeod and Cynthia Martin. A page featuring Lumiya from that issue was my very first vintage Star Wars OA page purchase back circa 1999, direct from Mr. McLeod. This is a white whale for me. The addition of a Simonson Star Wars page (as rare as a unicorn before auctioning of the Palmer estate), featuring Shira Brie (my favorite of the characters introduced in the original Marvel run), from this story arc and particular issue, was at the very top of my original Marvel OA collector checklist. Also, it has Hoojibs. Hoo boy! This is the May! Social/Sharing |

Pay the toll to the rebels
Write in circles to the clouds
Keep your mind on the Lucas
When the sequel come around
Hold Brie in your art tonight
In the magic of the dark Sith knight
Save me from this OG fight
Jedi game of life
Like a poem said by Jo Duffy instead
You hear the last few words of your life
With a haunting past, now you're both in a trance
It's time to cast your spell on the night
Arbra with Shira
Amor Luke na na
Arbra ca da bra
Shira Luke gaga
Walter with Palmer
Arbra Luke na na
In her tongue she said
Darth or love tonight
Arbra with Shira
Arbra with Shira
Arbra no Leia
Arbra with Shira
Feel the beat under with Brie
Walter's on fire
Shira Lumiya
Arbra no Leia

I'll take a published Simonson page any way I can get it. Thank goodness Mr. Palmer's estate saw fit to share his art treasures with the rest of us. Congrats on your unicorn.

Nobody would ever know these Simonson pages were pencilled by him, but for Star Wars, a stylistic consistency was what they wanted most in terms of the visuals. Nice talking heads page either way!
