DescriptionThis is an original penciled drawing of SPIDER-MAN by artist CHARLES VESS from 1985. It shows Spider-Man wearing the black costume introduced in 1984's The Amazing Spider-Man #252, later revealed to be the alien symbiote Venom. The drawing is on a sheet of drawing paper approximately 13 3/4" x 10 7/8" and has been carefully stored for decades in a smoke-free home. It was acquired in person from artist Charles Vess at the San Diego Comic-Con in 1985. The previous owner is a great guy. He preserved this drawing lovingly bound in an artists sketch book for 34 years. I lost out on a page from ASM 277 in the early 2000's. I kept getting bid up and lost by ten dollars. It was my first attempt to win art on ebay...didn't have the experience to protect against sniping. Not five minutes after losing I get an email from the seller." Uhh, the winning bidder changed his mind so it's your's if you want it at the final bid price." I thought I was getting scammed because it seemed disingenuous that some one would lose interest just minutes after bidding and winning. Before I could answer back the seller sent another email. "DO YOU WANT THE PAGE OR NOT." I was fine with the price but confused by the sellers behavior.I didn't answer. I don't have that page. I know where it is.I do have an amazing drawing that simply can't be beat. There are a finite selection of Vess ASM pages and Spiderman drawings on CAF.Now I own a great one and am so happy to share it with all of you. Social/Sharing |

"Wow"; coming from a lifelong Spider-Man fan, this piece really blows
me away. Charles Vess is one of those rare artists that are impossible
to score a piece of art with. One of my personal favorite all-time Spider-Man
covers is "Web Of Spider-Man" no#1. And yes, it was created by the brilliant
Mr. Vess. After reading your back story, concerning that Charles Vess Spider-Man
page you were cheated out on, Mike, I'm sure glad to see you finally scoring
a Vess piece, and what a awesome piece of art it is. Many might say this was Karma.
As for myself, I'd rather call it "Devine intervention". In any event, congrats on
a beautiful rendering, and sharing it with the rest of us beggers.. :)
p.s. And in the words of the immortal, Stan Lee; 'nuff said.. ;)

OMG. This is a very valuable find protected for almost 35 years without seeing the light. I thank you for showing it for our enjoyment and I know you will. I'm sorry for what you say on ebay, we've all had similar experiences from time to time. The sad thing is that we have to learn from these kinds of performances. Fortunately you have museum pieces that we would not get the rest of collectors in 3 lives, like Spider-man by Ditko / Kirby or Silver surfer.... Enjoy them!

Vess on Spidey... soooo goooood. Fell in love with his art via Sandman, but this is something else.

Conveys a gracefulness that we don't always get to see with Spidey. It's beautiful!
