DescriptionSilver Surfer 12 p 5 1969This one appeared like a shooting star, and I moved mountains to track it down and posses it.Trouble is, you never own or posses a treasure like this page. The artistry casts a spell and the art somehow owns you. I find this page as mysterious as that golden light Vincent saw when he opened the briefcase in Pulp Fiction.Or whatever the hell glowed in the trunk of that car in the 1984 film Repo Man. What moves a man like John Buscema to create an artwork like this page? I've stared into the Milky Way and can never figure it out. All I can tell you is this one plays like a symphony, a concerto sans false notes.Pure burning cold love, loss, loneliness, fury and betrayal. In the last panel, in spite of it all, a powerful push forward by The Surfer to fight, rather than to die self absorbed. Dan Adkins was the best embellisher on John's Silver Surfer for me. He decorates Big John's Sentinel of the Space Ways with encompassing depth, contrasting darkness and light brilliantly. I met John about a year before he passed away.He was a prince of a man.I showed him another SS page that I owned and he held it in his hands. I watched his eyes laser across every line while his mind traveled back in time to when he first created it.I never enjoyed a moment with a personal hero quite like that moment.Years later, I faced a tough decision, selling that SS page to buy my Kirby Captain America 198 Cover. Of course I knew one day I wanted to get my hands on another John Buscema Surfer page. I really wanted the finest example of a John Buscema Silver Surfer page that I could find.I will always miss the one I gave up. In a perfect world I would've kept all my art. The right page for me took years to reveal itself. I found this beauty for sale in plain sight. The entire universe somehow missed it. I grabbed on to the Surfer's board (Vicariously) and I've been holding on all these years, with no idea what I'm doing. Social/Sharing |

Beyond words. I can understand why you didn't go into broad discription over this piece. It simply speaks for itself. Anguish, sadness, anger, determination; John Buscema poured out all these emotions into one awe-inspiring piece of art. If you were seeking out the ultimate Surfer page ~ from this definitive classic series ~ then, truly, your goal has been met. Now please exuse me while I go wipe the drool from my mouth.

The more black ink on a page the better. And when it's Buscema SILVER SURFER, it's better yet!

There are Silver Surfer pages, and there are Silver Surfer pages. And then, there's THIS!!!!! As far as I'm concerned, the darkness of space is the ONLY backdrop for this character! And I love the range of emotions from panel to panel. Sorrow, regret, anquish, anger, and determination, all on one incredible page!

Everything that is the Silver Surfer is on this page! A lesson in characterization and storytelling that nobody can follow, nobody... It's only 5 panels and 5 expressions of the same character, but then... Comic Art with a capital "A"!

By now you have heard this a myriad number of times, but this is the best example of a Silver Surfer page I have ever seen. I agree with you 100%. Dan Adkin's inks make Silver Surfer look 'shiny'. On many of the other pages I have seen, while Buscema's fluidity is still there, the Surfer looks the 'white' surfer. Love how all the panels are filled with the Surfer but especially love the 1st and 4th one as those are out of this world!

The Surfer is one of my all-time favorites (...top three for sure). The great Kirby may have created him, but Buscema’s was the look that really sticks for me as the quintessential character look. Fantastic page of art!

I started out reading comics before I ever knew you could collect artwork. And even though I mostly stopped collecting comics when I started collecting artwork, I still read artwork pages like I was reading them in a comic. It is very possible this is the first page I've ever come across where I actually tried to IGNORE the text on the page, and just look at the artwork by itself. Not because there's anything wrong with the text/dialogue. But the visual storytelling is so astonishingly good, you don't even need to see what the Surfer is saying. Look at the depictions of his expressions as you move through the page. That's a true master artist at work. Starting right with that first panel, you FEEL the tortured angst that is such a hallmark of the Surfer's character, and then the determination as he sets forth. Man, I miss John Buscema. I know others have said it, but I'll just agree, if it's not the best Surfer panel page out there, it's darn near the top of the list. While it probably goes without saying, I'd be kind of a jerk if I didn't say Huge Congrats on being the owner of this remarkable page.

Amazing page and a great story. I don't think anyone calories the essence of the Silver Surfer like Buscema did. The expressions and fluidity of the figure are what makes this era Surfer timeless.
