DescriptionAs a self-styled devotee of Steve Ditko, it almost seemed inevitable that Paul Smith would find himself drawing one of his idol's creations, the only question was when. Smith got his chance at the close of the classic Marshall Rogers run on the good doctor's title with issue 56 and made the most of it.In this page from that issue, Smith uses widescreen panels to show that not all is what it seems to be with three curious visitors to the Dr. Strange Sanctum Santorium. Smith was a self professed fan of Ditko's rendition of drapery and movement, and throughout this page, Smith shows that his long hours studying these components of his mentor's work paid off. Terry Austin's clean lines complement Smith's clean work quite nicely. Social/Sharing |

I still have this issue it's that good. Wonderful addition to your collection. You're right about Smith being a devotee of Ditko. You can see it in his lines

Amzing light effects in the first panel! Paul Smith certainly paid homage to his idol on this page.

Great page! Smith's work on Dr. Strange was excellent, and Austin was the exact right inker for Paul's pencils. This was a great run, and this page is a perfect illustration. I may have to go find the back issues to remind myself how much I enjoyed these stories. Thanks for sharing!

The art was amazing on this book during this period. In part, I think it was the fact that Dr. Strange was a bi-monthly book then and it allowed artists like Paul Smith to take their time and really deliver something special. You can tell that this is a labor of love on everyone's part.

Love this Doctor Strange page from the great Paul Smith. Delightful page with three ordinary visitors to the Sanctum Sanctorum being revealed as followers of Strange's enemy, Baron Mordo. Fun to see them stripped of their disguises and revealed for who they truly are. I love Smith's layout for this page, using only long horizonal panels to tell the tale. It's a unique look and it works well for this story. I really like that third panel with Adria beautifully drawn as she confronts Strange. That final panel is pretty cool as well, with all three sorcerers getting ready to unleash spells on Doctor Strange, each with their own magical pose. Paul Smith is an amazing artist and he really works some magic on this page.
