DescriptionBatman #400: An event comic drawn by an "All Star" line-up of artists of the day. Not a great story to say the least, since it was basically an excuse for Batman to confront his entire rogues' gallery with George Perez (and to a lesser extent Steve Lightle) given his standard DC task of putting all of them on a moderately sized panel. As far as the art goes, only 2 sections have held up: the Bolland and Sienkiewicz sections; the latter being at the time, a rare interpretation of Batman by the artist who was still working up a head of steam and interested in pushing the boundaries of good taste in comics. In this episode, Bats and Ras meet again in the Batcave like they did for the first time way back in Batman #232. The writer Doug Moench doesn't seem to have taken the story all too seriously - recalling Ras' origins as a James Bond-style villain, and dishing out assorted nonsensical set-ups with abandon. Mr. Sienkiewicz turns his 7 page job into a titanic struggle between "Christ" and the Devil (the chapter is titled "The Tempting"); thoroughly suffused with bristling, over the top, expressionistic rage. This isn't the brooding yet cool and calculating Batman of the rest of the story, but someone with a mental disorder and anger management issues. The year was 1986, the year that Frank Miller and Co. decided that Bruce Wayne would require a permanent room in Arkham Asylum. Side Note: Note the comparison between Ras and Abraham Lincoln (of Giant Penny fame) in the second and third panels. Something to do with Ras' long held wish to emancipate the earth from humans presumably. ____ Auction Description: Bill Sienkiewicz Batman #400 Story Page 18 Original Art (DC, 1986). This page from "Chapter IV: The Tempting" of the Doug Moench story "Resurrection Night!" features Ra's al Ghul and Batman in the Batcave. Panel 4 is a call-back to the Bill Sienkiewicz cover for the issue. A wonderfully moody and stylized page created twice-up scale in ink with white paint highlights over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 18". The last panel is a stripped-in art correction taped in from the reverse side. Matted to 16.5" x 22.5", the page is toned and in Very Good condition. Social/Sharing |

This is a great page. I was talking to a friend how we both forgot to bid and seeing it in your gallery, i'm glad I didn't bid. Congrats on a stellar example from this book.

Thanks! If you had remembered, the page would definitely not be anywhere close to this gallery. You already have the famous cover - need to leave some crumbs for those at the mid-end of the ladder...

Sublime Sienkiewicz. I'd forgotten he had done any interiors in this book as I have not looked at it in decades. I remember the cover which remains one of Bill's most important works in a career of many important works. This page is perfect Sienkiewicz...I need to learn how to collect from you. Every choice is not just stellar but prime examples of the best.

Yikes...I think a sizeable amount of collectors looking at your collection would think quite the opposite, Jeff.

Bill's Batman as pure emotional expressionism, gnarled and disjointed with a cape that had a life of its own, is indeed one of the two images (the other being Bolland's depiction of Ra's rising from the Lazarus Pit) that have stuck with me from this comic. (To be fair, I recently saw the opening page of the Kubert sequence on CAF and thought it too was a masterful bit of sequenctial storytelling.) Cheers for adding another fine page to the ever growing wonders in your collection.

Gorgeous page, one of my favorite Sienk pages--and I'm not even a hardcore Batman guy. Love the way the published page was colored too. Beautiful in both stages of production, which is not always the case with comic art. Great piece!

Hard to imagine a better Sienkiewicz example from Batman 400...this is just a gorgoeus piece of work from him, Suat. Great addition to an already stellar gallery!
