DescriptionIf memory serves, this Wonder Woman pin-up by Steve Rude had an asking price of around 15K on Rude's website about two decades ago. It sold at auction for 14K on Heritage in 2014. I wanted it way back then but the price seemed a bit stiff. 10 years later, and the slightly lower auction price this time round seems just about right given the nasty inflation in OA prices.I still feel this is one of Rude's best paintings but fully appreciate why it remains unpopular (and somewhat undesirable). There are a handful of subjects a collector expects from Wonder Woman art: Wonder Woman in bondage (crossing her Bracelets of Submission or in peril); Wonder Woman as a (Greek) warrior; Wonder Woman fighting mythological monsters, Wonder Woman flexing her muscles in heroic poses; or in a cheesecake pose. Wonder Woman interacting with young girls doing cute things...Nope. The amazon warrior is hardly known in this day and age for doing stereotypically "feminine" things. But you don't have to be a woman to like kittens surely? Description from Steve Rude's CAF page: "This is probably one of Steve's most beloved paintings. It has been sold. It was done for DC as "Do Anything" for a Wonder Woman cover. They couldn't fit it with a story and ended up publishing it in Wonder Woman #200 and also the Wonder Woman coffee table book." Comiclink description: "WONDER WOMAN #200 LARGE PAINTED PIN-UP: AT THE FAIR. The art has an image area of approximately 16" x 25" mounted in a 23" x 31" frame. Painted by master artist Steve Rude in 2000 as an homage to the work of old masters like Norman Rockwell, this stunning piece features Wonder Woman at a county fair playing with some adorable kittens. It was originally intended as a cover image but instead was first published as a pin-up in Wonder Woman #200 (2004). It was also published in the 2004 book Wonder Woman: The Complete History by Les Daniels. Rude worked in watercolor on board." Social/Sharing |

Ha ! One of Rude's best super-hero(ine) image, if not the actual best, or at least my personal favorite. Fits perfectly in your peerless collection.

ps: love the quaint, old-fashioned framing, adds so much to the "timeless vintage" quality of the piece.

This painting is amazing! I love the purity and goodness of it all. That is something WW has always symbolized for us mere mortals and if that does not resonate and lift one's heart then what can? Kittens!

Wow...we are way more similar than I thought. I've pined over this piece numerous times - I actually think it is the perfect Wonder Woman image. So glad to see it in such a great home!

One of my favorite Rude paintings. Great colors and a lovely depiction of Wonder Woman.

Another terrific acquisition. This painting conveys such warmth and compassion, aided by Rude's immense figure drawing skill--both human and feline in this case! Put me in the camp with those who have a fondness for cats and cat pics. The little guy in the middle and the one poking out of the box both remind me of one of my own.

I love the detail in this paining. It's a beauty. I'm sure that it will look great hanging on a wall.

Rude's channeling Norman Rockwell. A slice of life of Americana and what she symbolizes for women young and old. Wonder Woman will show that love is powerful, even as a warrior in the never ending fight for equality.

One of Steve's all-time best. Everyone knows this piece, even if they've never seen it as published. I remember talking to you about this one way back when...it ended up where it should be!

This is adorable, and I mean that in the best possible sense. What a great shot of WW doing none of the Wonder Woman-ry things you list. The color scheme and composition are fantastic; the gloved hands of the girl holding the box are genius as is the expression on the face of the woman in black/gray walking by. Finally, the detail of the falling maple "helicopter" seeds just sets the tone and mood. Congratulations!

You know, I never noticed it before but are those gloves supposed to be some sort of Cheetah inside joke? Is that what you were implying? And is that guy looking on supposed to be H. G. Peter?

Didn't intend that interpretation, but it's such a fun piece that you may be right on both counts.

Congratulations on this beautiful "feel good" painting! This is my personal favorite Steve Rude painting and, like yourself, I was hoping to purchase it from Steve 20+ years ago, but could not afford the price. I will take a humble brag on the painting's creation as Steve had completed a commissioned painting for me featuring Wonder Woman with my family's pets prior to his doing this piece. I recall Steve telling me that doing the painting for my family convinced him that he could do a more elaborate piece featuring Wonder Woman and a bunch of pets! Congratulations again on a true gem!

Was watching this one very closely, all the while wishing I had the funds to make a go at it. Was really hoping it would end up on CAF so I could have a place to visit it regularly. I can only imagine what these colors are like in person. A truly magnificent piece of artwork. Congratulations!

I guess I'm guilty of expecting WW in those other sequences you mentioned. I think I saw this when you first posted it, and passed on by as too tame. Later I saw it highlighted on Update and took a better look. Really a beautiful and skillfully made piece. Masterclass in color theory. Pretty sure everyone I know outside of the hobby would rather see this on my wall than the stuff I collect.

I love, love, LOVE this image from Rude. Over the years whenever I see it I pause to enjoy the wonderfully nostalgic vibes that it radiates. I'm glad it ended up in such a great collection. Congrats!

This is as much of an homage to Norman Rockwell as it is to Wonder Woman. I think its brilliant, and the haters are wrongheaded.

And, as Indiana Jones might quip: "That belongs in a museum!"

Beautiful Wonder Woman cover, IMHO. I like the idea of WW chilling out with little kids and reminding herself why she does what she does. Sometimes heroes get so obsessed with what they're fighting that they forget what they fighting FOR.

Ah so this is where it landed! I remember seeing it at auction thinking this was a lovely Wonder Woman piece! Unfortunately there were other priorities at that auction haha
