DescriptionI might be wrong - it happened many times in the past and will happen again in the future - but, so far, I consider this splash page the best example of Buscema and Alcala genius.I probably paid way too much for this page but the funny thing is that, for several of "my precious", I did pay too much at the time. But in retrospect, the too much of ten years ago is almost nothing compared to today's standards. Anyway, back to the art. Gorgeous in person, this splash was also used for the cover to the B/W magazine French version of that story. As you can see, they removed the wizard but kept the rest of the page so in a way, this piece is both a splash, title page and a cover. Sweet !! Social/Sharing |

I agree that this is one of the finest Conan splash pages out there, far, far superior to ANY that have been posted up on CAF. Whatever you paid, it was worth every cent! ENJOY

Hey, congrats on getting a nice Buscema/Alcala piece! In all honestly though, this doesn't even come close to the splash from SSOC #20 p.34, to which I don't think any other of the splashes they created even come close. The crazy thing is I used to own it and then sold it around 6 or 7 years back. But nobody seemed to give a crap about this team supreme back then. I put it up for sale on my website for a wopping $750 back then, and it still sat there for at least a couple of months before someone finally bought it! I can't quite recall, but it's possible I might have even had to give a discount on it. My, how times change....

This is the best Buscema/Alcala work on CAF to date. The #20 splash is simpler, and possibly a slightly more iconic Conan image. But this one is so elaborate and stunning. Lets put it this way, I'd take either one in a heartbeat. When you lose your mind, David, call me...

I can say definitively that, in my case, this is the most memorable splash page from Buscema and Alcala's storied run. Simply amazing!

Since I grew up a DC fan, I don't have the same reverence for Buscema. But I've always liked Alcala's interpretation of anything he touched. I agree with your assessment of how time changes how one values art vs dollars over time.

I think the word Iconic is an understatement for this piece! Absolutely Stunning image by an amazing team of artist and what makes this even better is the story it's from. If you still have your car, you can always live out of there until you recover............:) A Huge congrats on this piece and one that deserves to be framed and hung up with pride.

One of the all-time best from Buscema & Alcala!! I had hoped to secretly sneak away with this one as you did, so no matter what you paid, IT WAS MORE THAT WORTH IT! BIG Congrats!!

When I saw this splash posted for sale by a dealer, my initial reaction was exactly yours..."way too much". But I also agree with you on your appraisal of this page as being the best of the best. I too would have paid "way too much" for this page.....with no regrets. Congratulations on getting this page. I consider this REH's greatest story.and a wonderful example of Big John at his very best!

My addiction to Buscema/Alcala is from these French Conan magazines in the 70ties. The print quality was correct but nothing compared to the originals when you have the chance to see them in person. For the covers they were usually using painted versions of a splash from the story. You can check them here: http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-3390-BD-Conan-Une-aventure-de.html This splash here is a real masterpiece.
