Karate Kid vs. Guardian by Pere Perez

The first time I saw Pere's art was, appropriately enough, in the Guardian Special that he drew a few years ago. I really liked his art and especially dug his action sequences. I've since followed his career through the Superman books, Batgirl, Batman, Archer & Armstrong, and a bunch of other comics he's illustrated. When I saw that Pere was going to be at Wizard World New Orleans, I knew that I wanted to get a commission from him, and got in touch with David at Spanish Inq to set it up. About a week before the show I got a scan of the finished commission and was blown away! Pere captured the characters' movements perfectly here and I love the shininess on Guardian's armor and shield. Big thanks to Pere and David for this fantastic commission!

I love the Guardian as a character. I loved the old Jack Kirby stories with him and I loved the more recent stuff that James Robinson did with him. That said, Karate Kid would beat the crap out of him. Guardian is tough, a skilled fighter, he's wearing armor and he has that shield. So he'd last at least thirty seconds, which is more time than I usually estimate for Val Armorr's opponents! Then after the fight, I think Mon-El would get mad at Val for beating up his friend.

Not sure if Pere told you but he has been doing kung fu for years. I believe he even was a professor of wing chun for a while. So he was perfect for a martial artist character.
