DescriptionGrail alert!Don Lawrence was one of greatest British comic artists of the C20th, and, in Britain, the Trigan Empire (first in Ranger, then in Look & Learn, written by Mike Butterworth) was his magnum opus. He was able to toggle from cosmic horror, to imperial grandeur, to space opera, to domestic drama, every week for over a decade. The colour work is close and accurate, but like all great masters, very loose on the page, designed, of course, to pull together perfectly in print. The Trigan Empire was my first comic, and I thrilled to be able to own these pages. Sadly, 'The Fallout Menace' (and what a menace it was...sent shivers down my ten-year-old spine), was Lawrence's last work on the Trigan Empire. He had discovered that the publishers, IPC, were reprinting his work in Europe without paying him royalties (an all-too common practice in British comics at the time, when artists were work-for-hire) so quit in disgust. He would go on to develop 'Storm' in the Netherlands, and influence such modern day greats such as Chris Weston. This story would be reprinted in the IPC German/Swiss anthology comic KOBRA (as the lower right side panel indicates). Hopefully Lawrence got a cut this time... Thanks for the info - I couldn't wait and got the complete Lawrence Trigan Empire via the Dutch publishers a few years back. They hold up well!

Damn. So good! Well done on bagging these. That first page in particular is spectacular. Then again, every Don page is great.
