"No-one is innocent'.

Toxic comic was a creator-owned 'adult' rival to Fleetway's 2000AD. Predictably, it didn't last long, and collapsed in acrimony. However, within that there were some truly innovative stories, art and artists.

One of these was Nigerian artist Morak Oguntade. 'Coffin' was a pretty minor piece of 1990s work from Pat Mills with Alan Mitchell. As per with Mills, a supernatural force arrives to wreak vengeance on the monied/upper class. So far, so 'Finn' or 'Nemesis The Warlock', but what made 'Coffin' pop was the absolutely extraordinary art of Morak. The titular avenging shape-shifting African spirit - part man, part panther, part reptile, part eagle, all teeth - cut a bloody swathe through the colonisers and big game hunters of NYC, using imagery that I had never seen before in a comic. It seemed be a truly non-western and genuinely African art, giving Mill's morality tales a queasy and visceral reality.

Toxic didn't really work out for anybody, and after a stint doing other work in London, Morak returned to Lagos. He remains an illustrator, but nothing I've seen since matches the bloody horrors of Coffin.

Sick design! No wonder there are worshippers at the ready for this god like being that embodies the animal spirits of the lands!
