While it seems like Jack Davis did a million covers for the TV Guide, he really only drew a couple of dozen of them, starting in 1968. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to pick up Jack's final prelim to his very first TV Guide cover, which saw print on July 13, 1968. The cover features three of the lead characters from the Andy Griffith Show; Andy himself, Jim Neighbors, and Don Knotts. I'm particularly enamored of the Knotts caricature, which Davis simply nailed.

As you can see by the images below, the final printed version of the cover was different than this prelim, though I actually prefer the prelim, with Andy cranking money out of that TV machine. The other additional image is of the back of the board, which has some of Jack's ink wash swipes, as well as a drawing of a Roadrunner-type bird.

A beautiful piece Rob! Perhaps someone felt that the obvious image of Andy cranking money out of the TV was too 'crass' (and true!) but it shows Davis' astute vision which made him such a great satirist and caricaturist.

Man, was there ever a time when Jack Davis wasn't just GREAT? As much as I love his work at EC/Mad, it's his commercial work on magazines, movie posters and album covers that really get me jazzed... Thanks so much for sharing this gem--and congratulations!
