DescriptionIn 1972 French artists Jean "Moebius" Giraud and Philippe Druillet were commissioned a piece of cover art for BD 72, the special issue on comics of "Image et son," a middlebrow magazine on film that occasionally devoted articles to the then relatively trendy comic art medium.The two men, who were already close friends, produced this 8 x 9 masterpiece in ink on drawing paper. The faces are by Moebius and the helmets(?) by Druillet. It is one single inked piece, with neither collage nor overlays. Eight years later, in 1980, the same artwork was used in a colored version for the cover of Métal Hurlant n° 57 bis "Anthologie de l'Age d'Or." Compare the two printed versions. I have always found the later one particularly stunning, since I first laid eyes on it as a fifteen-year-old (over thirty-five years ago--yikes!). I had been trying to locate this piece since it first turned up in a French auction 4 years ago but it was purchased by a buyer that does not display their collection. It re-surfaced in the fall of 2015 with an insane reserve price and did not sell (by a long shot…). When it was listed again in the April 30, 2016 Artcurial auction in Paris I set my mind on becoming its rightful owner. And here it is now. The most perfect Moebius / Druillet jam ever!
