No doubt an inspiration for young girls to get into the sciences over in Europe.  This is a very delicate portrait of her and very cute with a manga face.

Actually manga arrived in Europe only in the late 1980s. Leloup created the character in 1970. Even though her design evolved slightly along the decade, he was never inspired by the artwork of actual Japanese comics. Such a rendition as this one, drawn in 1981, was a perfect example of Franco-Belgian artistry, completely "ligne claire" except for the shading of Yoko's hairline.

Actually, Berni Wrightson drew this in 1975, and it appeared in the "Dear Cousin Eerie..." letters column in Eerie #72, cover dated February, 1976.  He did a lot of Creepy and Eerie portrait heads in 1974 and 1975 which were often in the opening of other artists' stories for the Warren magazines.

Best regards,

Alec

Thanks for the input, Alec. After double-checking the mid-1970s Eerie issues, it turns out that this head first appeared flipped sideways in the readers' mail page of Eerie #70 (Nov. 1975). In the following issues, the cravat was deleted and the head appeared only from the chin up.

I would bash you for knocking ASM #2 if I weren't so blown away by this piece.

I know you're pulling my leg—you know very well I would never bad-mouth Steve D. if my life depended on it. I'm just saying Alberto Breccia was light-years ahead of what was going on in the US and Europe already in 1963. Even the Hugo Pratt of 1963 could not withstand comparison with Breccia.
