Description

Update following Mike's comment

===========================

Mike, thanks for contacting me.

This is a very simple story: I won an auction on eBay several years ago from Heroes, at the time if I remember correctly they were located in San Jose before moving to Campbell.

I visited the store and ended up buying other pieces on top of the Kirby I won - a couple of Byrne pages, a Mignola pin-up, an Art Adams piece... and this sketch.

I just thought the sketch was nice and indeed, it reminded me strongly of the Neal Adams drawing but I was not familiar with your work and thought, maybe you did lightbox for some sketches, or did a couple of drawing very similar...

I did not think of questioning the seller since I probably spent 3-4K for all the pieces (a bargain compared to prices of today ;-) and the sketch was 100 dollars or so.

The store owner seemed also quite knowledgeable and had several Neal Adams pieces so I did not think of asking many questions...

I just sent an email to Heroes and copied you Mike. Hopefully they can explain.

If you want, I can remove the piece and close the gallery. I do not mind at all.

Now... honestly, the other reason I did not think too much about the signature was that if somebody wanted to fake something, he would have signed as Neal Adams don't you think? Less suspicion, easier to sell...

But I agree - the pose, style, quite weird. Maybe an interesting story after all behind this piece? Who knows... Let's hope we learn more very soon!

Very strange. I wonder why Mike would do something like this.

This is also very strange to me. I don't recall ever doing anything like this. I simply never did this type of sketch which is a direct and blatant copy of other work. I was not that good an inker then and the coloring looks like markers not pencils. the type used for storyboards by assistants at Continuity. If I'm wrong, I have no memory of it, which would be odd. Very suspicious.

Mike - thanks for contacting me. I updated the description detailing a bit more how/when I did purchase this sketch. I sent an email to Heroes and cc: you so that hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

Faking Adams can be precarious because it's usually easier to see mistakes. But faking Nasser doing Adams makes it much less suspicious. The inking has some weak points that are uncharacteristic of Adams, such as the protruded knee, and certain areas of the other leg. My inking was also notably more more heavy handed than this and the marker coloring (or shading) is something I never did on sketches. Though the signature looks like my handwriting (also like Neal Adams' handwriting). No objection to keeping it posted here.

Thanks Michael, you're a gentleman and let's hope we find more about this piece. I must confess that I am quite intrigued now by this sketch and wondering what's the story behind it.

Mike is definitely right about his inking style being "heavy handed". But I think it's authentic. Why would someone fake a drawing of Mike imitating / copying / tracing / whatever a famous image by Neal Adams. Hey, I love Mike. If it's really by Mike, there's probably an interesting story about why he doesn't remember. If it's not by Mike, there's probably an even more interesting story.

I agree with on both counts, Will. I've studied this piece in Photoshop to try to see the inking structure and it's done in away of line and feathering with defining areas to fill in blacks. That's a method that I never worked in. When I've inked, I'd usually ink everything in one process, filling in blacks as part of the line work. This piece looks more methodical and has much more sensitivity to line than I capable of when working in conventional materials. (more...)

But I agree with you that it's an odd thing. I would have had to have been in a highly "altered" state to do such a thing. Which is not out of the question. But then again, I still have vivid memories of all the altered states I've been in, and this one simply doesn't register. In all honesty, it looks more like a commission reconstruction done on a page that had my signature on it... or a very good reconstruction of my signature. I understand the many quest9ions this raises but like you said. It's also strange that I'd do such a thing. But we're investigating and are looking for ways to track down the "Stevie" who apparently commissioned it. Good to see you again! -Michael
