Lovely piece, and per Kevin himself, this is the published version:

The first version was done in a simple, under-rendered style. Marvel had approved the sketch but rejected the finished cover art because of the lack of rendering. So I redrew it and added more shadows and feathering. I think I had a brand new electric eraser that week and accidentally put a small hole through the Bristol when I was nearly finished so I started over and drew version three. Three is probably the published version. Later, I patched the hole in version two and sold it.

So yes, there are at least three versions out there (maybe even an 8.5 x 11” preliminary sketch as well) but none of them are recreations. They were all done in 1989 and they’re all legit.
