DescriptionThis is a dream come true. As chronicled in the excellent book by John Coates, Don Heck: A Work of Art, "Don Heck’s art table was purchased early in 2014 by longtime comic collector and historian Roger Hill, who seized the opportunity to save the table and other historical records from being sold off as junk or sent to the local landfill. Don had purchased this table around 1951 at the time he entered the field as a professional freelance artist, and over the years had used it for hundreds of comics illustration jobs for Charlton, Comic Media, DC, Dell, Gold Key, Marvel, and others." Among the comics drawn on this table is Tales of Suspense #39, the origin and first appearance of Iron Man. In most of the vintage photographs of Heck, he is seated at this table. As noted in the book, Roger had intended to donate the table to Columbia University, but they declined the donation. I have long been a fan of Don Heck. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but that did not diminish my appreciation for his artwork. Next to George Tuska, I have more artwork by Heck in my collection than any other artist. So, when I learned that Columbia passed on the opportunity, I inquired about purchasing the table. Roger graciously agreed and we met up on Long Island, where the table was being stored. We loaded it into my rented van and my father helped me drive it home. The table now sits in my study, with a few pieces of Heck artwork displayed on it, and an almost palpable aura of history surrounding it. It has ink stains and scratch marks on it, all of which simply serve to give it character. I have lots of artwork that I treasure, but I never really thought about having a "grail" - until now. My sincere thanks to Roger for making it possible.Social/Sharing |

So great that your Heck pieces can return to where they originated. I'm sure Don Heck would be happy that his table is where it belongs.

I never fail to be impressed by this amazing artifact. I'm really glad it worked out for you to acquire this piece of history. However, I am disappointed with my alma mater for not wanting to add this table to its burgeoning comics archives. It all turned out for the best, it seems. Thanks for sharing this Dewey!

What a grail! To think that TOS 39 and the start of Iron Man came from this table...
