Description

I've never heard of Lawrence Hoffman before or after I bought this painting a few years ago, but it sure is nice1 Cover for Signet #807 "The Bandaged Nude" by Robert Finnegan. Small, only about 12" square.

Guys, if you've ever looked at any of the early Popular Library covers, you often see many of them credited to "IM-HO". That stands for Sol Immerman and Lawrence Hoffman. They were both illustrators and partners in a commercial art studio, and designed the first 125 covers in the Pop Lib run, though Hoffman executed 81 of the first 86 covers himself. Later on, the HO in "IM-HO" sometimes stood for Robert Holly, who was their first studio employee. Hoffman also did the covers for several of the Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler covers for Pocket Books in 1942/1943, including The Thin Man, Farewell, My Lovely and my personal favorite, The Bride Wore Black. John, are you saying that this original measures a tiny 3" x 4", like most of those McGinnis pencil prelims?
