DescriptionBeautiful linework on this Christmas piece by the, mostly forgotten, but brilliant cartoonist, J.W. McGurk.Joseph W. McGurk (American sports cartoonist and illustrator, 1887 - 1939) - Joe McGurk was an early 20th century cartoonist, best known as the creator of Kayo Tortoni, the most famous woman character in sports cartoons. McGurk's work was published by the Associated Press Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Record, the New York Journal and the New York American among others. He was also known for varied illustrations for the Cosmopolitan in the 1920s .His biographical materials are collected at The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. McGurk played himself along side Winsor McCay (Little Nemo) in the 1924 Goldwyn Pictures silent film, The Great White Way, a film centered on the sport of boxing. It was directed by E. Mason Hopper and produced by Cosmopolitan Productions Social/Sharing |
