Description

OK, so this piece to me, IMHO, Is one of the best takes on Red Sonja that I have ever seen. You guys know that I collect a lot of her and have had many different artist do them and there all great in there own way! This one came about because of a good friend who contacted Julie for a commission and decided that since she is together with Boris Vallejo, he would like to see her take on the famous cover of Red Sonja called "Invictus". Well, this is the stunning results of her interpretation of Red Sonja. When my good buddy first showed me this about a year ago, I was stunned by it's Beauty! I say this because everybody has there take on what she should look like and most of the time she is portrayed in a softer and bustier look. Not that I mind........:) but I really think that she would be more slendor and more muscular and I'm pretty sure they had no silicone back then. I really believe that Julie nailed what Sonja would have looked like! So at the time that my friend showed me this, I wanted it really bad and so we started talking about a trade and then all of a sudden.....POOF! She was gone in a massive trade that he had been working on prior to me wanting her and the other trader evidently wanted her also. I was bummed but understood what and why he did the trade as it worked out very well for him and I was happy that he had achieved a great deal for himself. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and I'm goofing around in Mike Burkey's shop and SLAMMO! There she is! I had forgotten who he had traded with because at the time (about a year ago) this piece was for the most part, out of my price range thanks to the economy. Well, I contacted Mike and after going back and forth a few times, we were able to come to a trade and so now she has found a permanent home. The other cool part about this piece was that for Christmas.........OK, Chanukah.....I asked my wife for the new Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell art book called "The Ultimate Illustrations" hoping that my Boris piece might end up in there (It did!!! page #32) but this one ended up on page #13! This piece is pretty big at about 14x20 and my apologies for the pictures as she does not fit on an A3 scanner. Like Boris, the pictures don't capture the beauty of what Julie was able to draw. BTW, You will probably see her again in my best of 2010!

Absolutely stunning, Ken! The textures are just so rich and beautifully managed. It was fate that it should make its way into your collection.
