DescriptionThe Invisible College: My first featured page is a nice little page with a little personal history behind it. I originally started collecting comic art in the late 80's after graduating from college (and getting a job so I had money to actually buy art). By 1990 I had turned 25, decided I was an adult, had sold all my comic collection and had stopped purchasing comics and comic art. My trips to the comics store dwindled more and more over the years, that by the dawn of the new millennium in 2001, my comic book fix was being satisfied by the occasion trip to the local Books-a-Million to read comics and magazines ““off the rack” (HEY, THIS AIN’T A LIBRARY!!! That’s right, it ain’t, cuz if it was, you would me more QUIET!!!). During one of these trips in 2001, I spotted the above featured page in a “graphic novel”. The young woman in this picture reminded me of one my "long lost loves" from ages past (actually the dude in this picture also looks like her future ex-husband as well, but that’s her story). By this time I was a ripe old age of 38, and like most people had, learned a valuable lesson. Namely, “Being an adult sucks!" So I decided to try and see if I could find the original art for this page using the Internet. Unusual (considering I’m a computer programmer), up to this point, I had never used the Internet for this purpose. Only the regular usages, like email, trading stocks, news, weather, and to see that monkey smell his finger and faint. Literally one hour after seeing this page at “Books-a-Million” and searching with Yahoo (this was before Google, you whippersnappers!!!) I had located this page at The Artist's Choice http://www.theartistschoice.com/. This was in the fall, and at this time the owner was having one of his half price sales (hint hint for future reference), so I bought this beauteous page for the scandalous price of $75.00. This was the first new piece of original comic art I had bought in over a decade, and thus, a new case of “collector’s fever" was born. The above page is by Phil Jimenez, and is from the series "The Invisibles" by Grant Morrison (of "Final Crisis" fame) . This is another hard to define comic book series (like "Final Crisis") you have to read to believe. It's one of the "ultimate conspiracy we are the matrix fight the power I am not a number it's revolution yeah baby V for Vendetta" comic series that writers from "across the pond" seem to favor (boy, lose one revolution over 200 years ago and never live it down).Ok, you might say, "There's nothing unusual or controversial about that!", to which I would reply, "Why are you talking to yourself?" Actually, I had forgotten this, but going thru some of the materials I had saved over the last few years to prepare for this website, there is one. From "Comic Book Urban Legends Revealed #151": COMIC URBAN LEGEND: Jill Thompson has had at least THREE comic book characters modeled after her! STATUS: True! Artist Steve Yeowell appears to have based the character Ragged Robin (pictured above) on Thompson, although Thompson doesn't seem to think so...(see the original blog to see her picture for comparison). For my "Comic Book Year Disassembled" post (yes, this is a combined response), I went to my first convention of the year, the local Chattanooga Chattacon. As I left early saturday night, and went to my psychiatrist for a session, she ask me as she poured me a beer how Chattacon was this year. I told her it was a bunch of fat old men sitting around getting drunk watining to die. Her response, that much fun huh? Guess she won't be checking out Chattacon next year. I have no plans for regular updates to this site, It will just be stream of consciousness from now on. And the next stream I will be paddling down is the time stream, as I revisit my first original comic art purchase along with some "Infinte Crisis" controversy as I prose the pose "Charlie or not Charlie, THAT'S THE QUESTION?!?
