Description

I am a big fan of Caniff's landscape drawing & have been looking for a good example. I won this on Ebay thinking it was drawn as a gift, but have been enlightened (see comments). The image is 6.5" high and is the penultimate panel of the April 3, 1938 Sunday. A lot of people including me would like to find the rest of this strip! This panel is the last I'm pretty sure to contain both Burma and the Dragon Lady, albeit the size of ants(see additional images), and it concludes the Klang storyline. Caniff's coloring here is very close to the print colors as reproduced in the IDW edition. Blues and greens have faded greatly- you can see the original colors at top & left where the mat covered it.

The very classy dedication is to Mollie Slott (what a great name!), editorial assistant to Joseph Patterson when Caniff began 'Terry'. She also discovered Dale Messick and eventually became a Director of the Chicago Tribune/ NY Daily News Syndicate.

Very nice, Aaron. I was watching it on eBay too and it's definitely a cool piece.

Great piece. I was watching it too but had to sit it out. I am glad it found a good home and thank you for the nice scan so we can all enjoy it. please keep me in mind if you get tired of it.

Ah, Aaron, so you're the fiend who outbid me for this piece ~:c) At least it went to a good home and a good guy. The piece is earlier than you wrote, and is two-thirds of the bottom tier of the April 3, 1938 Sunday page. And you'll be further delighted to know that the figure in the red cloak/robe by the car in the foreground is a certain blond bombshell. Congrats Aaron!

Holy cats! I thought the style looked earlier, but the size threw me off. Thanks Rob! I must revise my intro.

I'm a huge Caniff fan especially *Terry* I think of two OA collectors, portfolios in hand sitting acroos from each other.. They take turns pulling out their stuff..the other guy saves his best for last and lays it on the table..grinning. And than you bust out this baby and the smile fades...your adversary turns and walks away. That's what great art can do...drive a man to crazy thoughts like this.

Spellbinding panel...such a great drawing and a crucial juncture for this classic strip. What a treasure!

The rendering of the landscape is just beautiful and the coloring, even if faded, knocks me out. It's a great piece. Congratulations Aaron.
