Description

Frank' caricature work is often under appreciated, mostly because his fantasy inks and paintings are so strong. It's the sign of a great artist to be able to capture the essence of a person via caricature. Frank's Ringo portrait for MAD got him strong recognition from Hollywood which led to great things for Frank. This self portrait is nuanced and subtle - it belonged in the Al Williamson collection until Doc Dave picked it up. It has the hint of added color and it's really special.

Lucky for us Frank chose art over baseball.

Awesome piece!

I'm in the minority, but I prefer Frazetta's cartoonier work to his fantasty work.  I worked on the funny animal book that Kitchen Sink Press put out and the work was pretty durn wonderful, as is this drawing.  Such a great lively line he had.

I agree Rob, his humorous ink line was light and lively and full of joy and  life! I think this piece is sublime!

What the man could do with just a few brushstrokes is indescribable.    Amazing.  Thanks for sharing!

This is an amazing drawing!  I was glad to see it in person when Dave held his auction a few years ago.  Frazetta's ability to capture a likeness is uncanny, and his lines are so fluid.

Love this self portrait! The style is reminiscent of Al Capp's "L'il Abner," which, of course, Frazetta worked on. He looks a little like a hillbilly from Dogpatch here. Interesting--Did Frazetta see himself that way?

Hi Bill! Yes you know I think Frank did see himself this way. I think this look evoloved into Johnny Comet being a similarly muscular and handsome blue collar guy...  it's a humble portrait of an awesome artist.
