DescriptionA wonderful Thing splash by Stuart Immonen with very nice inks by Scott Koblish from a very poignant story (aptly entitled "Remembrance of Things Past") as Ben Grimm returns to his very rough boyhood neighborhood on Yancey Street. Artistically speaking, this is a really nice piece - and a title page to boot. Great perspective and wonderful execution. And it's difficult to believe that this marvellous piece of artwork is already more than two decades old.A bonus was that this wonderful page went for a lot less than I thought it would, especially given the fact that Immonen is an excellent artist and also given the subject matter of the piece itself. It still goes to show that art of the first rank can still be bought for reasonable prices. That having been said, I was prepared to go much higher for this piece since it spoke to me. This Man, This Monster. No more tragic a figure than Ben Grimm. Trapped in his hide as the Thing, he now represents the many outcasts of the city that can only hope to be ignored when they walk amongst the populous. A very busy looking 60's NYC street with the old architecture and the start of urban decay.

Now that's just lovely! The Thing has weight. And the attention to detail in the background to fill the composition? Simply exquisit. Congrats CAB.

Wow, the manner in which Immonen lit this scene provides so much weight, depth and emotion to it. It evokes a quiet solitude, yet simultaneously a lot of power. A very beautiful piece all around and I'm especially happy to know that you got it for far less than you expected you may have to pay for it. As you know, CAB, you and I are both equal proponents of the idea that if you are willing to broaden your horizons as a collector, there IS indeed still art out there that can be acquired for reasonably affordable amounts. Congratulations!

Superb splash indeed. So grounded in reality due to various factors.
I think the fact it was cheaper than you thought (even though I found it was quite decent an amount) is that it was drawn before Immonen really exploded with Nextwave which is when everyone began paying attention to him and prompted his artistic evolution, at a time when he was perceived as very solid but not a fan favorite. But you can clearly see hints of that evolution in this and I find the inks and the way the blacks are spotted help in that.

As I mentioned in the description, it was the artwork itself that caught my eye and, much more than that, spoke to me.

Great splash cramed with so much detail and depth to it, and yes, from a fun story too. I have a couple of pages from the issue so take that as a seal of approval, for whatever that is worth!

What an atmosphere man!!!! Benn is always relaxed in any context any situation.... it looks he is always waiting for a clobbering moment... that is sooooooo cool! Huge congrats!
