DescriptionIn many ways, I was fortunate in the sense that when I first began reading Marvel comics, they were clearly on an upward trajectory as Stan Lee harnessed the various talents that were to become legends in their own right. Of these, perhaps Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko stood out (John Romita Sr was on the cusp of joining the Marvel revolution (as I explain below), although there were other standout artists and inkers as well, including Gene Colan, Don Heck, Joe Sinnott, Chic Stone and Mike Esposito).I count myself as doubly fortunate because I could enjoy the talents of the late, great Wally Wood. He was not at Marvel very long, but his abilities were truly astounding. As I have recounted more than once, even as an inker, his inimitable style (including his spotting of blacks) was impeccable and almost always overwhelmed, as it were, the pencils. His run on the Avengers lasted just three issues - this one was to be his final issue as John Romita Sr returned as inker on the next issue (his first modern Marvel art). This is a standout battle page - between Cap and Power Man. Woody's inks clearly enhance the entire - and stunningly dynamic - page which is itself brilliantly laid out and pencilled by Don Heck. I was so struck by the artwork at the time. It is a real thrill to be the steward of the original art to this particular page in the book. To be perfectly honest, though, the inks in this issue somehow do not appear to be as lush as in the first Avengers book which Wood inked (#20). Perhaps it was his final issue. Or perhaps it is simply my imagination. Regardless, though, this is still a fantastic page. Social/Sharing |

The beauty of a Wally Wood ink line is never to be underestimated, as seen here. The three issues that he inked were childhood favorites of mine among cherished comic books in my collection. Congratulations!
