DescriptionIt has been said that I have adapted from collecting Silver Age artwork to more modern (and affordable) artwork. I am just grateful that I love this hobby and collect across genres and timeframes, so it was really quite natural for me to collect more modern artwork as well. However, "modern" is also relative. This piece, for example, is almost a quarter of a century old. The term "affordable" is equally relative. Depending on the content of a page even within the same book itself, prices can vary quite a bit. And then there is that dreaded - yet anonymous - individual we term "the underbidder", who is actually more than a bit of an original art "undertaker", seeking to bury you in order to obtain the artwork you want. For this particular piece, there were elements of everything I have stated thus far. It was, I felt, a really, really nice piece involving two classic characters (Spidey and the Hulk). The top half splash was also unusually dynamic as JR JR and Scott Hanna capture - suberbly, in my view - that perception of dynamism as well as motion as our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man attempts to evade the clutches of the Green Behemoth (not the Jolly Green Giant in this instance, I'm afraid) - only to be finally grabbed as slick motion comes to a sudden standstill, with Spider-Man ending up in the violent clutches of the Hulk. And that is the beauty of our hobby. Even with such a relatively detailed description, I could not capture the beauty of the page itself. Put simply, the page speaks for itself. But it certainly wasn't cheap. And someone else really wanted it as well. However, collecting original art is a mixture of science and art (as well as heart). And I am very happy to be the current steward of this fantastic and dynamic piece of art. By way of a Postscript of sorts, it was quite wonderful to be able to meet JR JR himself recently - if nothing else, to compliment him on his art and also to let him know how much his Dad's art meant to me as well. I found him to be a really nice and genuine person. Social/Sharing |

Many thanks, Timothy! I am always amused by that expression (Dial H for Hero?)!

Yes, "Sockamagee!" is indeed Robby Reed's famous exclamatory interjection that all the cool kids in Littleville were using back in 1966.

It's easy to take Spider-Man's side since it's his title and he's the underdog that we can all relate to. It's also easy to take the Hulk's side in this conflict since Spidey is a pest to him. Who doesn't get satisfaction for finally squashing a fly that's been annoying you. JRJR and Hanna are great modern storytellers in this page and still going strong on a monthly title.

Many thanks, Marcus! Yes, JR JR and Scott Hanna are still going strong indeed today, almost a quarter of a century later!

Wow, I'm not sure I even have the words to describe the magnificence of this page. It really does speak for itself, doesn't it. I love the relative size of Spidey versus the Hulk in orderto make the Hulk look massive! Really exquisite work and I'm not surprised at all that more than one person wanted to go after this one badly!

Many thanks, Rubén! While the concept for the half splash may appear straightforward, its execution was another thing altogether. It was really, really well done.

Many thanks, Mikail! Indeed, when I was young, comics were a kind of "movie" for me and served that purpose on many an occasion as we did not go out to the movies much.

It's a great page. I really liked this part of the run and thought Hanna's inks really did a great job of portraying the lean, lithe interpretation of Spider-man by JR jr.

Fantastic fight scene! Really contrasts Hulk's bulk vs. Spidey's agility.

Many thanks, James! Yes, the proportioning is extremely skilful and, as you have pointed out, the contrast is very appropriate.

Ooh, you got this beauty! Congrats, it's amazing!! I was bidding on it, but dropped out fairly early in the game. BUT I managed to pick up a battle panel page from the same issue in the next smaller Heritage auction. So we're "JRJr Spidey 14 buddies." 😀

Many thanks, Bill! I do agree that the top panel would have made a splendid cover image. It is a really unusual - yet highly effective - composition.
