DescriptionHaving had a little more spare time this week, I decided to dig through the archives and post this page from a well-remembered childhood issue – the Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5. In this important historical issue, we learn about what happened to Peter Parker’s parents and why he was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. The actual story itself demonstrates Stan Lee’s undoubted imagination and story telling skills as integrated into this slam-bang issue is none other than the Red Skull. This page itself is quite a stunning action page. The primary artist is Larry Lieber (Stan’s younger brother (Stan had of course changed his name from Stanley Martin Lieber)). The inks are by long-standing Spidey inker, Mike Esposito. And the bonus here is that the late great John Romita Sr also had a hand in this entire issue – assisting throughout with the pencils. The Spidey figures on this page also appear to suggest that JRSR might himself have had more than a passing hand with them. Social/Sharing |

Many thanks, CJ. "Frenetic" is such an apt word. And many thanks for pointing to the razor effects that I agree must have come from JRSR.

Awesome Spidey action!
Many thanks. And, as mentioned, there is, as a bonus, more than a hint of Romita Sr as well.

incredible Spidey action page! I always loved this ASM annual. The moment you see the cover image of the issue you know you're in for an important story/issue in ASM

Many thanks, Nick. I was blessed to get into the hobby earlier and this piece reminds me to be so grateful for what I already have.

Romita Sr razor patterns! Very nice fluid inking for a tight action page too! No one is more dynamic than Spidey as even the Red Skull has to stay within himself in order to land a blow with a short elbow.

Many thanks, Marcus. You are yet another person who has referred to the JR SR razor patterns. I must confess that I had missed that at first. It looks like his "supervision" of the production of the entire story entailed a lot of specific work as well.

Such an interesting and rare pairing of this hero and villain, made all the more amazing by the excellent three panel "widescreen" storytelling! Romita always gets the attention, but Lieber deserves kudos for this, no doubt! Another wonder from your wonderous collection, CAB!

Many thanks, Rubén. As I just mentioned in another comment, this piece reminds me that I should be grateful for what I already have rather than lament what I cannot have with the escalation in prices of vintage original comic art. And, yes, Larry Lieber did a great job on this story although Romita's "supervision" seems to be very detailed indeed.
