Description

Fred Hembeck is a great artist with a unique style - so unique that nobody has come even close to replicating it. No wonder, then, that there has been so much interest in Fred's artwork, especially of late.

Whilst going through my collection, I found a couple of absolutely HUGE redos of Marvel covers that he did for me way back in 2006. This is one of them - from a fondly remembered issue of ASM. They are enormous (larger than twice-up), so please excuse this badly taken photo of it.

Looking at it again after so many years, it is so Ditko, yet Hembeck at the same time. Fred stayed totally true to the original cover but it is uniquely his style that comes through at the same time.

Yes, this is fantastic! Look at how he rendered the Spider-Man figure, in spite of the fact that it's so small. I also really like how he drew in the people down on the street. It's a wonderful looking commission and even better that you commissioned it yourself way back when. Even better, it's larger than twice-up! Given that it was a commission, can I assume that it was YOU who requested Fred do it at that size?

Many thanks, Rubén. Yes, he has more detail on the people down on the street than Ditko himself. I requested at least twice up and he did it slightly larger. I was simply blown away when I received the artwork!

Beautiful piece with a ton of nostalgia tied to it!  The logo and cornerbox are tremendous! Large Hembecks are great to behold!

Many thanks, Marcus. Yes, his take on the cornerbox is nicer than the original one itself! It is so uniquely Hembeck. I was amazed when I received the oversized package - it was way beyond my expectations.

Many thanks, Corey. Apparently, Fred has stopped doing commissions so this is especially special for me.

Many thanks, Nick. This was done at a time when Fred was very happy to do really really large sized commissions. I just checked his website which states that he has ceased doing commissions altogether.

This is a stunner of a commission, my friend.  Such a beautiful use of blacks and whites, and all those lovely details. And still, those great Hembeck swirly knees!

Many thanks, Rob. Fred did put in a lot into this commission. As you have pointed out, the use of blacks and whites is truly stunning.

Wow man! That is insanelly good ... from the corner box to the detailed people in the street. I ever loved that issue. That city scene cover is in my subconcious since I was a child. The Cat Burglar! Fred Hembeck reinterpretations in his unique style are an art by they own. Thanks for sharing that beauty my friend,, I really have enjoyed it.

Many thanks, as always, Toni, for your very kind words. Although many (perhaps justifiably) have stated that this is one of Ditko's weakest ASM covers, it is quite dynamic overall - and Fred Hembeck did a splendid job reinterpreting it.

A modern Marvel masterpiece!  A fantastic choice of cover for Fred to tackle (I feel like there may be a story here...!  Care to share with us why you chose this one?), and the large size must -really- allow the image's narrative to sing: that monstrous water tower falling towards Spidey...  Brrrrr!  And those bricks must be almost life-size!  I love how Fred draws Spidey here, too...  Is this the most faithful Hembeck rendering of Spidey to the source material?  I'd believe it (knee-squiggles notwithstanding... :) ).  For me, though, a Hembeck recreation starts and ends with the hand-drawn logo and hero box, and Fred -KILLS IT- here.  Loving that Comics Code Authority popped out over the "N", just like the original, of course.  Fred's "cover version" of a beloved image elicit's only pure joy from this viewer.  -SO- cool that you were able to commission this directly from Fred!  Congrats, CAB!

Many thanks, Jason. As mentioned, it is a fondly remembered issue. And as always, your description is so wonderful that I feel tempted to place it up in my own description as an addendum. You are also astute in pointing out that Fred was quite true to the original cover in general and to Spidey in particular - all whilst maintaining his own unique style. One could not ask for more than that!

Such a difficult cover to reinterpret. He captured Ditko's quirky artistry while leaving his trademark style. Beautiful piece
