DescriptionA really stunning page from Felix’s recent art drop. In addition to the excellent artwork as well as intense imagery by Tradd, I was also drawn to this page by the inclusion of the partial flashback to Dr Stephen Strange’s accident (first told way back in Strange Tales #115, and which Tradd differentiated with a different (and very effective) style of inking). It is quite clear that – even with intervening physical ailments – Tradd puts his heart and soul into every page he produces (including this one). His style also seems to me to be perfectly suited to titles with cosmic and/or magical themes (such as this particular book and, of course, his earlier book, Silver Surfer Black). Just some personal observations on the recent controversy over the prices of the artwork for this book. I love this hobby and collect widely across genres. I should also say that, right from the beginning, whilst careful with my budget (I still am, in fact especially nowadays, with ever rising prices), I was always prepared for the artwork I purchased to go to zero although for some (especially from the very first Marvel titles or from classic issues), this was not likely to happen. Nevertheless, I think that it is good to be a bit of a pessimist in this hobby. The main financial prudence lies in staying within one’s budget at any given point in time (and stretching it occasionally to obtain a really nice and/or significant piece). As with most things in life, there will be hits and there will be misses. From my own experience, things tend to iron themselves out over time (although I should add that I have rarely ever had buyer’s remorse). However, there is one thing that nobody can ever presume to speak for insofar as another collector is concerned – whether a particular piece of artwork speaks to that collector – with that same sense of wonder that gripped us when we first encountered the four color medium as children. This sense of wonder cannot be measured solely in material terms. So let us not presume to judge – as my Mum used to say, “If you have nothing good to say, don’t say it!” However, the converse also holds true! So I hope that everyone can be as encouraging to others as is possible. We will all have different views, but we need not insist that we are correct. Quoting individual experiences will never cut the Gordian Knot in the quest to win an argument, particularly on pricing of original artwork. Just live and let live – and, more importantly, enjoy! PS: I hope that you like my other Dr Strange pieces by the other artists as well and as much as I like them! Social/Sharing |

Call me one who is still looking to appreciate his comic work the right way.
Though I fully agree his style is very suited to this series. The intro and back story is wonderfully told.
That last panel is an insane image and seems it could exist as a single fully created image to portray a complete book story.

Many thanks, Eelco! As mentioned, each person is entitled to his or her view - and rightly so. That said, it sounds like you understand this page perfectly!

Well said and great page I almost thought it was Andrade who did the flashback portion as it's so different in style! Congrats!

I really like that this page includes a portion of the origin, though to be perfectly frank, I love the "Chinese dragon" iconography all over the page even more!

You managed to get the last word on the CGC thread...without having to post there. A trick not even Doctor Strange could pull off! KUDOS!

Beautiful! I love how it feels like the inclusion of the origin flashback here is a thing of nightmare, using Doc's own beginnings as fuel for the forces against him. Gorgeous and densely packed textures and styles here, making the whole thing feel like an intense 50-piece all-accordion symphony of a mystic battle (come on - you know it would work!! :) ). This feels like really intense and personal work by Tradd to me, and you are fortunate to have scored such a beauty, CAB! Congrats! And your description is absolutely spot-on and wonderful, CAB. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and fantastic outlook.

The smallest sliver of a panel is a nice central emotional focus of the page which gives us Tradd Moore's maze and pattern extravagance!

That's a very cool page, my friend. I honestly don't know much about Moore's work and didn't know anything about the "controversy" until I read about it here. I don't read the boards very much, but it was interesting to see all the varied points of view. Regarding the artwork, the textures, patterns and shapes are amazing. I get an Alex Nino vibe from some of it, mixed a bit with Cyil Pedrosa's work. In any event, I'm glad you snagged a page you love. It clearly has gone to a loving home.

Stunning page from Tradd Moore's Fall Sunrise! I like the way this page revisits Dr. Stephen Strange's tragic accident that led to his becoming a Master of Sorcery. As you point out in your description, that brief memory is drawn in a different style than the rest of the story. So it's a very unique page in the book, a very important one. I love Tradd's work on this story, it's different from everything he's done before, and very powerful. Congrats on picking up one of the best pages in the book!

Dear Bill, thanks so much! The added origin segment was indeed what drew me to this page.

Your description is full of wise words. If you love the artwork for the right reasons you never have regrets except about losing artwork you may have to sell or trade to get it.

Many thanks, Peter! Unfortunately, trade-offs have on occasion at least to be made with regard to all aspects of our lives (including this hobby).

Congrats! I hope that IDW does an artist edition of this imaginative artist. His Silver Surfer and now Doctor Strange are mind beding taking the best imagery of Kirby and Ditko and taking it to another level. Moore's art was incredible in Luthor Strode, but wow how it has evolved. Congrats! Seriously, thank you for sharing.

Many thanks, Ilia, once again for such perceptive comments! I do think that an artist edition would be both appropriate and superb.
