Description

The sales for this book were phenomenal. Not surprisingly, the demand for the original artwork was beyond ballistic. That having been said, the first page from the first issue of a series is still pretty much hit or miss. However, this one hit the sweet spot for me for several reasons.

Perhaps the most important reason was that, symbolically, it set the tone for me for the entire book as well as series. After all, this was about BATman AND Bruce Wayne. The layout as well as artwork for this particular page also spoke to me. It was not my most preferred page but ran a very, very close second (I definitely could not afford the covers).

Secondly, it was relatively affordable. I must confess that I had expected a higher price given that it was not a mere filler page. Indeed, none of the pages in this book could be said to be filler pages. This was a blockbuster of a first issue in every sense of the word.

As it turns out, this page was also used as a later variant cover. In many ways, that vindicated my original sense as well as preference for it.

I managed to obtain a page with Batman on it from the subsequent issue and hope to post that in the near future. But this page is still very special in the ways I have mentioned above.

PS: "Chiroptera" refers to the name of the order of the only mammal capable of true flight, the bat.

It's great way to get us into the story as the cartoony bats meant to teach children at the zoo are used thematically throughout the flashback sequences to underscore Bruce's survival instincts of the incident that would turn him into Absolute Batman.

Many thanks, Toni. Despite my nostaligia lying more in the Silver Age, I am so glad that I am also enjoying the Modern Age as well!

The sequence, on this page, dare I say on every page in this issue, feels like the storyboard to the movie. Perfect pacing, and really love the details on that last panel, especial the Zoo signage.

Great example and lovely write-up, can't wait to see your issue two page.

Many thanks, Michael. Yes, and, not surprisingly, it was actually the top panel that formed part of a subsequent variant cover.

The single most FUN page in the issue, for reasons you've already explained, CAB. That it was one of the more affordable ones is just an extra bonus!

Many thanks, Rubén. It is perhaps the only fun page in the issue. As you know, Batman's origin story is rather tragic. That having been said, there are multiple layers of meaning in this page as well.
