DescriptionI obtained the original artwork by Frank Miller for this particular page years ago. This is the color guide by Lynn Varley. As we all know, though, this is of course more than your run of the mill color guide. It is handpainted and it is indeed serendipitous to be able to obtain this piece and "unite" it together with the original art page.Social/Sharing |

Many thanks, James. Yes, this is especially so because, as mentioned, the color version is very cool artwork in its own right.

The mood of Miller's intent is enhanced by the Varley colors! At the start, Robin is the brightest element of the page. All the color and life is drained for the final panels in the steam room where the calculated inner workings of high government decide the fate of Jim Gordon.

The DK is, probably, the comic of all comics. To have anything from it is just a dream for the majority of the collectors. You have a COMPLETE page! Pencils, inks and colors. Lynn Varley's colors are part of the identity of this magnificent masterwork. That's a A++!

Many thanks as always, Toni, for your very kind words. In this hobby, patience is a virtue as it did take some time before the opportunity arose to "marry" both these pages together.

Love the early Robin appearances in issue 2! And Lynn's coloring just adds to the charm! Congrats on uniting the Miller Original art with the Varley Original paints!

Congrats on reuniting the OA with the Lynn Varley painted color plate for this page! It's a nice one that has everything you could want from Carrie Kelly, Batman, the mutants, TV News broadcast panels, and city politics! It is nice to see when these important parts of a whole in the production process of one of the most important comics of all-time get back together in a single collector's stewardship!

Many thanks, Kavi. Yes, it is so nice to have the original artwork as well as what is essentially the final printed version of the same page. The color plate is something else and is certainly original art of a sort in its own right.

Many thanks! Yes, reunited is a very appropriate word to describe what has happened as I thought that I had missed the boat some years back when I believe this piece first became available.

The Dark Knight art was illustrated in such a way that Miller and Janson did not lay down many larger black areas, which left the art more open for the colorist to essentially finish the line art with the colors. Which means that rather than just doing flat, even color fills, Lynn Varley also applied a lot of the shading and lighting techniques with her colors. That's why, while I usually prefer the line art without colors, on Dark Knight I've always preferred the fully finished art including the colors, as the art is essentially still somewhat incomplete looking on the penciled/inked boards with a lot of empty negative space. So for this series, having both the line art matched up with Varley's color art is essential to having the "completed" art. Congratulations on accomplishing that, CAB!

Many thanks, Rubén, for this very valuable insight. The color art is really superb to view in person and, as mentioned, is unlike the traditional color guide; it is a work of art in itself.

Wow! How cool that you were able to acquire the color guide to the same DKR page you already owned! It's a great page and I have to say I really love the whole aesthetic that Lynn Varley used on this book! I wish more comic bool pages (And covers) were given a similar artistic treatment! Stunning pick-up, congrats!

Many thanks, Bill. I count myself really fortunate to be able to "unite" these two pages together in order to have a complete artistic record of this particular published page in the series.
