DescriptionI just can't seem to get away from that Arthur Adams guy. Even in another artist's gallery! =)The first time I saw this piece, it was hanging on the wall of a San Francisco comic shop that was owned and operated by Arthur's then girlfriend. The rare instances when I would come into the shop and catch Arthur behind the counter trying to figure out how to work the cash register, are priceless! =) Anyway, when she closed up shop so the couple could move to Portland (he to work for Dark Horse, and she to manage one of Mike Richardson's comic retail stores), I was sorry to see the piece go, as I had always hoped to pry it away from her at some point. Fast forward to just a few months ago, when what should I see on eaby but this very same cover. I immediately contacted the seller to see if it was indeed Arthur's ex, and sure enough it was! Even more surprising was the fact that she remembered me. Apparently, she had opted to stay in Portland. Whereas Arthur, of course, had long since returned to the Bay Area, where he subsequently met and married his wife (the lovely and talented Joyce Chin). Anyway, I put the auction on my ebay watch list with every intention of placing a bid later on. But for one reason or another, I completely forgot when the auction ended and missed my chance to even bid on it. I swear, if I didn't have such good luck to offset my stupidity, I probably wouldn't have any artwork at all. =) Speaking of which, this is where my dumb luck comes into play yet again. The winning bidder of the piece actually put it back up on ebay about a month later! Needless to say, I didn't take any chances this time. I followed the auction from beginning to end and was able to place a winning bid in the closing seconds. Anyway, I am delighted to have this wonderful memento of those happy days spent at a small San Francisco comic shop, and the very nice young lady who ran it. HI GRACE!!!!! Social/Sharing |

Boy..am I glad I didn't bid on this one..I did want to..I think Rick Leonardi is one of the great artists to come out of the early 80's-( Cloak & Dagger/Spider-man being an amazing example of his superior talent--he always came up with great storytelling techniques, strong style, a flair for unusual angles, and just drop dead draftsmanship..oh and a very rare sense of visual FUN)...and you can't beat Terry Austin inks--nice to see the piece is in a good home.

Thanks Mike! I was really happy to add another piece by these two distinguished comic veterans to my collection. So I guess I'm glad you didn't bid too! But if you HAD, I know you would've given it a good home as well.

I'm starting to think you actually let pieces go just so you can push your luck and have a story to tell, lol.

It seems that way, doesn't it TC??? Unfortunately, I love this stuff way too much to take those kinds of chances. So I guess it's a good thing I have such dumb luck on my side (or destiny, or fate, or whatever you wanna call it)!

This definately brings back memories, Eric! I remember going to that same comic book store, "Ogleo", week after week and I would always look at this piece. I would see Art Adams and Mike Mignola showing each other their work. And I think you were behind the counter a few times too, Eric. I used to think you were a part of that store because you were there a lot! I always thought Rick Leonardi drew the best Colossus ever. Maybe it's because of this piece. If I remember correctly, This double page cover was framed nicely with a black mat and glass frame. And at a certain point, the original art fell off behind the mat and was out of place for the longest time. I remember thinking to myself, Colossus is heavy, that's why the right side of the page tilted lover behind the frame. :) I'm glad it's in your hands, Eric. Great Artist, Great cover, and definately great memories.

Still a great cover after all these years. I find myself coming back here to look at it.

This is one of those sneakily memorable covers. Great find by a great tandem!

A favorite piece from a very favorite artist of mine. I've been a huge Leonardi fan for (sadly) decades now, and Colossus was always my favorite of the X-Men. To see him get a leading role, by an immensely talented artist, was a huge treat for me. So if anyone other than me is gonna own this piece, it may as well be someone as cool as you Eric. Absolutely love the story that went along with this. Stories like this, that attach personal meaning and memories to the pieces we own, are what make this hobby so interesting and great. Congrats!

Congrats!Thank you my friend. Not all of the stories behind each piece of my collection are as special as this one, but I agree with 1000%. The stories are what make the art personal and, at least for me, creates a special bond between me and the art. I've had some people tell me that these are nothing more than lines on a page and there's no reason to get so attached to them. But since most of my art is linked to a special memory or a special moment, it's very difficult to separate the two. It's nice to know that there are other people out there who understand and appreciate that aspect of it.

Hard to remember a time when you could find something as amazing as this on eBay. This is a Leonardi masterpiece--I loved his Colossus story, and his takes on Man-Thing and Ant-Man are super cool.

Amazing piece from one of my preferred pencilers. Love the Man-Thing and Ant-Man on "back cover". Funny how you got it. Wrapping flag pick!
