Description

This Common Elements commission holds a unique distinction: It's the only artwork in this gallery that I commissioned twice.

I'll explain. A few years back, I commissioned Dave Simons, who enjoyed a nice run as the inker on Ghost Rider, to draw a Common Elements scenario involving Johnny Blaze and the original Batgirl racing motorcycles. Sadly, Dave passed away before he was able to complete the work.

Some time later, Bob Budiansky -- who penciled most of those Ghost Rider issues that Dave Simons inked -- agreed to take on the commission. Bob's concept takes the two heroes to the Vermillion Cliffs of southern Utah on a moonlit night. And, as you can see with your own eyes, Bob flat-out nailed every aspect of the assignment.

Somehow, I think Dave Simons would be pleased.

Special thanks to Jeff Jaworski, Bob Budiansky's art rep, who made sure the bikes kept rolling on schedule.

One your best concepts, delivered perfectly! Very nice common element of its own having Bob do the piece Dave was slated to do. Kinda keeps it in the family.

Dave would have loved to ink this - he loved Ghost Rider and he liked inking Bob. It's a beautiful thing indeed.
