Description

More than three decades and a half after his tragic death, Wally Wood remains one of the iconic figures of American comic art. A brilliant artist, his inks were so powerful that they overwhelmed virtually every piece of pencilled art by other artists and made it his. His spotting of blacks was impeccable and his own art could overwhelm in its detail and be overwhelming in detail even when otherwise simple in form. He traversed virtually every genre and, even in his later years when he ventured into the sphere of superheroes, he excelled. His redesigned Daredevil costume (in the mid-1960s), for example, remains the defining one even today. But geniuses are often also flawed in many other ways - the story has been told more than once. In fact, one of the earliest books on Wood's life and work, "Wally's World - The Brilliant Life and Tragic Death of Wally Wood" (by Steve Starger and J David Spurlock), uses the final panel in the present piece as its cover illustration. I did not realize how very many of us are still fascinated by the life and work of Wood decades after his passing. This piece is yet another example. It comprises only 3 panels, but says perhaps everything as only comic art - a unique medium comprising words and pictures - can.
