DescriptionI had not realized that I had never posted this particular page on my CAF Gallery. It was only during Rubén's Roundtable this evening (which brought together three uber Superman original art collectors (Matt McAllister, Jason Sylvester and Bill Byers) together to talk about their focus on Superman original art) that I realized this. It was a really enjoyable and informative session. I must confess that although I read - and did in fact continue to read - Superman comics when I was a child, the Marvel Revolution led by the late Stan Lee converted me to Marvel. Nevertheless, childhood memories of the Man of Steel are still fondly ensconced in my memory banks. And when this so very striking image came up for auction several years ago, I could not resist the opportunity to try to obtain it. I was fortunate. It was expensive but it is presently under my stewardship. And it is the finale page to that magnificent John Byrne 1986 mini-series which recast the Man of Steel. It is a wonderful splash page and has to be viewed in person to be truly appreciated. Amazing John Byrne art with marvellous Dick Giordano inks.Social/Sharing |

Many thanks, Jared! That the word "iconic" has been used in three successive comments puts me to shame that that apt description eluded me when I was writing the description for this particular piece.

Wowza! Grew up with Supes in the '70s in comics, tv, and of course, the movies! Which all set the stage for the monumental event of John Byrne moving over to the Distinguished Competition and setting out to remake their flagship character. What a perfect capper to that event. Congrats, CAB!

Many thanks, Felix! I know that this will sound like heresy but because I did not grow up with Byrne during my formative years, so to speak, there is not that burning desire for his artwork (which is just as well because it is so very expensive nowadays). I did like him a lot as an artist though. But this image of Superman is huge and was simply irresistible if I could have swung it (just - but not today though!).

Culmination of the mini series and brought back a lot of the lustre of Superman as the movie era was fizzling out. A big coup for DC to get Byrne as he had done almost everything at Marvel.

On a more serious note, I am also baffled. As mentioned, this piece was obtained many years ago and I probably wasn't posting much then and it slipped into the mists of time - until my memory was jolted by today's show.

Dear Rubén, as I mentioned in an earlier comment, I am baffled myself. I guess that I always knew I had it but had forgotten to post it. I did want to post it a long time back but it probably just slipped my mind. I don't want to psychoanalyze myself but it is quite possible that the generational reason (that I did not grow up, so to speak, with this mini-series and which I therefore did not realize how important it was to a later generation) may be one reason why. Also, I never used to post much in any event. Whatever the reason, it was YOUR show that triggered this so kudos to you, my friend. BTW, you could let the participants on your show know. I would also love to know what they think of this splash (although it's not the DOS).

I always buy art for nostalgia, storyline, character, content, and artist. I also love self containing character pages with word balloons that tell a story and don't buy anything without word balloons. This formula has served me well which is why it's impossible for me to sell anything since I love the art purchased. It also creates true scarcity. I don't have nostalgia for this since I never read it but everyone told me I should pick up this period. All said this has every other characteristic I look for in a page. Deff a keeper and I wouldn't be surprised if you receive a lot of offers. Congrats again on a great hold:)

Many thanks for your very interesting observations (especially on the interaction between words and images which is the essence of the medium (although books such as Step By Bloody Step are the extremely rare (I would say black swan) exception). It is definitely a keeper.

This is one of two ultimate Superman slashes by John byrne. (*the other's the final page out of "Man Of Steel" issue 1*) My own feeble words could not do the justice this "masterpiece" deserves. Leave it to say, you've been blessed by God Himself to own such greatness. I'm floored.

Many thanks, Daniel! This is indeed an amazing piece and I am indeed blessed to be its current steward. Do take care.

Byrne made Superman exciting again! This page is a good example of why!

Nice piece! John is NOT the earsied person to Ink. I have some experience. It's hard to figure out what he "means" sometimes. In fact, sometimes he scribbles-in some ren dering going in 4 or 5 different direction at the same time, and if you do that with Ink, it becomes a black area with no shape.
Terry is still my fave over John, but Dick's work here is damn dazzling<
